Many families look to the garden when they need more flexible living space, and this Smart Modular Buildings project shows just how transformative a well-designed garden room can be. Working with an underutilised corner of the plot, the team created two buildings from their contemporary Evolve range, positioning them to form an elegant L-shaped layout. Thanks to the sharp architectural lines of the Evolve design and a consistent palette of materials and finishes, the two structures read as one cohesive building once installed.
This thoughtful configuration has turned an overlooked part of the garden into a multifunctional hub for work, hobbies and year-round relaxation – complete with a covered hot tub area.
Two Evolve Buildings Working Seamlessly Together
The project combines two buildings from the Evolve range: a 9.1m x 3.2m building, which includes the extended canopy, and a 3.2m x 4.3m building designed as a dedicated office. The Evolve range is known for its contemporary styling, with a distinctive canopy detail that runs along the front elevation. Here, the canopy incorporates LED downlighting, creating a warm, inviting glow in the evening and highlighting the clean silhouette of the buildings.
The client chose a cream exterior paired with soft green uPVC doors and windows, finished white internally. This combination creates a New England-style look that complements another Smart Modular Buildings project already on the property – a Suffolk Barn garden room used as a poolside retreat. Even though the buildings come from different ranges, the cohesive palette creates a harmonious relationship across the garden.
Comfortable Garden Rooms for All Seasons
Each building is constructed using Smart Modular Buildings’ multi-layer insulated core structure, ensuring comfortable year-round use. The Evolve range benefits from TusC® construction for rigidity and security, combined with 18mm marine ply cladding set within a robust 4-inch chassis and high-performance polyisocyanurate insulation. Together, these elements create a durable, energy-efficient structure that is reassuringly solid.
Inside, the client selected the New England interior finish, which combines grooved panelling to the lower walls with smooth panelling above. Finished in the same soft cream shade as the grid-detailed ceiling, the rooms feel bright and welcoming, with inset downlights completing the contemporary look. Smart Modular Buildings offer several interior finish options, allowing buyers to tailor the appearance of their building to suit their own style.
A Garden Office Tailored for Natural Light
The smaller of the two buildings serves as a dedicated office. It features an outward-opening glazed door for easy access and a wide casement window positioned at desk height to maximise natural light and garden views throughout the working day. The layout is spacious and comfortable, offering a calm, well-proportioned environment for focused work while maintaining a strong visual connection with the surrounding garden.
A Spacious Family Room With Kitchen, Bathroom and Garden Views
The larger building has been designed as a multi-purpose family room with a bathroom, a small kitchen, and a comfortable seating area. French doors open directly onto the garden, and tall, full-height glazing extends the feeling of space by capturing views of the surrounding landscape. Letterbox-style opening windows help with ventilation while retaining wall space for furniture. The connection to the garden is a central part of the experience, making the room feel welcoming in all seasons.
A Canopy Designed for the Perfect Hot Tub Setup
A key feature of this project is the extended canopy, which Smart Modular Buildings adapted to create a sheltered hot tub zone. The canopy wraps around to the right-hand side of the main building, forming a protected corner with a solid rear wall and two open sides. This creates privacy and weather protection while still maintaining fresh air and views of the garden. There is ample space around the hot tub to move comfortably, making it a practical and enjoyable addition for year-round use.
