The concept for this fantastic space was initially to create a place to relax and watch TV and movies on a big screen. As our lives changed during lockdown, it evolved into a home office, with the owner working from home.
Kent-based Ark Design Build designed and built this 4.8m x 4.8m garden room. As with all of Ark Design Build's work, this is a bespoke design tailored to the customer's needs and site specifics. This style has become popular, and they created a similar garden office for another customer, which you might also like to explore.
A Unique Shape for a Challenging Site
In this case, the site posed some challenges. To maximise the available plot, one wall had to be angled to follow the boundary lines. Using a standard square or rectangular garden room would have left unused space between the building and the boundary.
As bespoke designers, Ark Design Build created the room from scratch, incorporating an angled intersection between the left-hand and rear walls. This didn’t compromise the interior space, especially as the Ark team built a custom desk to fit the area.
Windows Positioned Where the Customer Wanted
The arrangement of narrow windows above the desk is a striking feature. The horizontal and vertical windows provide glimpses of the area behind the room and ensure the back room is naturally well-lit.
Thanks to the fitted furniture, the office area does not intrude on the relaxation space. A sofa has been positioned on one side of the bi-fold doors, facing the longest wall, where films and TV shows are projected. The high-spec plastered and decorated finish is perfect for projection, eliminating the need for a screen.
Black Thermowood Cladding
A key feature of this garden room is its black exterior. The Ark Design Build team used highly durable Thermowood cladding, painted black for the external finish. The cladding is colour-matched with high-spec aluminium door and window frames, creating a striking and minimalist result.
