We’re seeing a growing number of homeowners commission purpose-built garden rooms to house golf simulators, and it’s easy to see why. For keen golfers, having the option to practise and play all year round—whatever the weather—without leaving home is a dream come true. But building a home golf studio takes careful planning. One of the biggest considerations is ensuring there’s enough height to swing the club freely, and not all garden room companies can accommodate this. That’s where bespoke designers like Timber Rooms stand out.
This impressive project in Godalming, Surrey, is a great example of how Timber Rooms work with each individual client to bring their vision to life. The client wanted a private space to practise using a GC Quad launch monitor system, but also somewhere sociable to enjoy a round with friends.
Creating Space to Swing the Club
In recent months, we’ve featured several garden golf studios designed with dual-pitched rooflines to provide extra internal height. What’s notable about this design from Timber Rooms is that it achieves the necessary clearance to swing the club within a mono-pitched roof structure. The building measures 7m deep by 5m wide, with a total height of 3.2m—ideal for comfortable movement.
To comply with Permitted Development rules, which restrict outbuilding heights to 2.5m within 2m of a boundary, Timber Rooms cleverly dug the building 700mm into the ground. This excavation has been stylishly handled with timber sleeper retaining walls and composite decked steps that lead down to the sliding door entrance, creating a striking, sunken garden feel.
A Stylish and Practical Design
The exterior features beautifully detailed vertical Thermo Ayous cladding. Thermo Ayous is a heat-treated tropical hardwood known for its stability, durability, and smooth grain, making it an increasingly popular choice for premium garden buildings. The vertical fixing emphasises the height of the studio, while the natural tone softens the overall form.
Along the front elevation, sliding doors are paired with a large opening picture window, filling the space with natural light. Both are fitted with blinds, so the owner can easily control light levels when playing. A contemporary canopy detail runs across the front of the building, with recessed lighting set into the underside—providing a subtle wash of light across the façade and illuminating the entrance beautifully at night.
A Luxurious Space to Play and Relax
Inside, there’s plenty of room to swing the club, practise, and relax with friends. The front section of the building has a crisp plastered and painted finish, paired with wooden flooring. There’s space for a comfortable sofa and golf bag storage, keeping everything within easy reach.
The simulator bay features a padded finish to the walls and ceiling, which enhances the acoustic properties of the room—important when practising indoors—and gives the space a luxurious, clubhouse-like feel. The rear half of the studio incorporates the green and hitting zone, with the GC Quad system fully integrated for high-performance tracking and feedback.
