The stunning local countryside inspired the design of this bespoke garden painting studio. Miniature Manors designed and built the space, working closely with their client to choose a harmonious palette of materials. Situated in West Sussex, where black barns are a familiar sight, the client wanted her studio to reflect this iconic style.
To achieve this, the exterior of the studio was clad in black-stained featheredge boards. White uPVC doors and windows complement the design, echoing the look of traditional farm buildings in the surrounding area.
The monochrome palette is elegantly tied together with the use of white soffit and fascia boards. These white touches provide a clean, cohesive finish that enhances the studio’s charm.
Maximising Natural Light
The studio’s design prioritised not only its aesthetic appeal but also the light quality essential for an artist’s workspace. Garden studios are an excellent choice for painting because they can be tailored to maximise natural light more effectively than indoor spaces.
For many artists, windows are ideally placed on a north-facing wall, as this provides consistent, stable light. However, when the garden layout doesn’t allow for this, roof windows become an ideal alternative. Miniature Manors incorporated a large skylight above the easel area to flood the studio with soft, natural light.
Additional light streams in through French doors on the front elevation, as well as top-hung side windows. These windows were strategically placed to allow for desk and storage space beneath, while offering a beautiful view of the garden – perfect inspiration for any artist.
Inside, the room features plastered and painted walls, finished in white to reflect and enhance the light further. Venetian blinds have been fitted, giving the client control over how much light enters the room at any given time.
A Seamless Process from Start to Finish
Before the studio took shape, the site housed an old greenhouse. The Miniature Manors team handled the entire transformation, from dismantling the greenhouse and preparing the site to completing the studio with a fully decorated interior.
Many garden room providers do not offer site clearance as part of their service. By choosing Miniature Manors, clients benefit from a single, dedicated team overseeing the entire project, ensuring a seamless experience and stunning results.
