Do you have an unused area of ground next to your garage? You could transform it into a highly functional garden office, adding both value and practicality to your property.
This project by Hargreaves Garden Spaces demonstrates how even compact, overlooked spaces can become an inviting home office. In this case, the clients had a narrow area between their garage and boundary fences. They saw the potential to repurpose it into a comfortable workspace suitable for year-round use.
A Bespoke Design Maximises Space
Hargreaves Garden Spaces created a bespoke garden office that fully utilised the available area. Building tight to all three boundaries required thoughtful planning, particularly to ensure long-term ease of maintenance.
The solution? Choosing durable, low-maintenance finishes. For the three inaccessible walls, the team used composite wood cladding, which resists rot and eliminates the need for regular painting. This practical choice ensures the office remains looking great for years to come.
Due to the limited access around the structure, the team designed the office so the walls could be assembled from inside the building footprint. This required meticulous pre-planning, with walls constructed and installed complete with membranes and external finishes already in place.
For the front elevation, cedar cladding was selected. Its natural, rich colouring pairs beautifully with Anthracite Grey doors and window frames, creating a striking, contemporary aesthetic.
Clever Glazing Brings in Natural Light
Building up to three boundaries can limit options for window placement. However, the Hargreaves Garden Spaces team cleverly overcame this challenge. By setting the office slightly forward of the garage’s rear wall, they created space for a wrap-around corner door and window unit. This configuration floods the room with natural light and connects it seamlessly to the garden.
To further enhance the interior, two smaller rectangular windows were positioned towards the back of the office. These add extra light and ventilation while maintaining privacy and a clean exterior design.
Looking Good, Day and Night
Hargreaves Garden Spaces also incorporated exterior lighting into the design. This addition is both practical—perfect for dark winter evenings—and enhances the building’s overall appearance. As the photos show, the garden office is as visually appealing by night as it is during the day.
