Some garden room designers have a knack for designing their buildings, so they nestle into a garden, with the new structure blending into existing planting. One such company is Ark Design Build, which focuses its work in the Kent and Sussex areas.
This garden room with secret storage shed built in Sevenoaks shows how successful Ark Design Build are at nestling their garden rooms into an established garden. The garden room has been designed to maximise the space available, but in a way so the existing planting has room to breathe.
As we can see, the garden room has been positioned in a tree-lined area of the garden. The Ark Design Build team are experienced hands when it comes to considering trees and their root systems when designing their rooms. Over the years, we have featured several of their projects where they have designed and built around an existing tree; you might like to explore them:
L-shaped garden room with shed
The building sits on an L-shaped footprint, which at its largest point it is 8m x 4m. The storage shed area is situated in the smaller wing of the L-shape.
The storage room is accessed externally via a 'secret' door. The Ark Design Build team clad the front of their secret doors, so it matches in with the exterior cladding finish of the wall. This detailing helps the door blend into the wall, which is aesthetically pleasing and adds a layer of security, not making it evident to others that there is a storage room there.
While the main garden room has a high-spec plastered and decorated interior, the storage room has a pared-back yet highly durable OSB finish. OSB is a perfect finish for storage rooms and workshops.
The main room will have a lovely indoor-outdoor feel thanks to the 3-leaf bi-fold doors. The high-spec aluminium doors are colour matched with the roof trims and exterior light fittings. The dark grey colour of the door frames creates a contemporary look mixed with the Western Red Cedar cladding.
The bi-fold doors open onto a large composite deck, offering the owners a lovely inside-outside living space. As we can see, the deck has been positioned to leave space for the tree and planting to grow.
