Beyond the Outside

We have recently been introduced to the work of Beyond the Outside, who design and build bespoke garden rooms in Sussex. Founder Liam has been working in the industry for a few years, designing buildings that are used as meditative spaces, photography studios, offices, and gyms, and has recently started his own company called Beyond the Outside.
Offering a bespoke design service, Beyond the Outside aims to tailor each building to their clients' intended use, individual tastes, and the space available in the garden. This process is showcased in a recent project in Shoreham-by-Sea. The 5m x 2.5m building has been designed to serve multiple uses: the main room will act as a home office and gym space, while the smaller room has been designed as a workshop for restoring old mechanical watches.
The project was not without its challenges, as it is situated in the garden of a terraced house, meaning all materials and spoil from the site had to be transported from the garden and around to the front of the house. The Beyond the Outside team managed this as part of the turnkey service they offer to clients.
If you look closely at this image, you will notice that the workshop has another door on the rear elevation. This thoughtful design element maintains through access from the lane at the back of the garden to the main garden area.
Insulated Traditional Timber Framework
Beyond the Outside constructs their garden rooms using a traditional insulated timber framework, which creates a strong core structure. They utilise C24 4x2 timbers for the walls, which are sandwiched between two layers of 11mm OSB board, significantly enhancing the strength of the frame. This core structure is the basis for additional layers on both the exterior and interior sides.
Externally, the most popular cladding finish with Beyond the Outside clients is Canadian Western Red Cedar, which is known for its long, low-maintenance lifespan and its attractive natural colouring. However, Beyond the Outside also offers maintenance-free composite cladding finishes and can source other finishes that clients request.
Inside, Beyond the Outside finishes their garden rooms with plastered and decorated finishes, creating a room akin to one in a newly built house. They are happy to integrate their clients' ideas; for instance, in one recent project, they designed a panelled feature wall, which will add a layer of texture and character to the room.
Turnkey Service
Beyond the Outside’s turnkey service means they handle the entire project for clients, from the initial designs to handing over the keys to a ready-to-use room. This includes the final electrical connection between the garden room and the house.
