Home saunas are having a moment—and for good reason. The wellness benefits of regular sauna use, from easing sore muscles to supporting relaxation and mental clarity, are well documented. More and more people are choosing to bring that sense of luxury and wellbeing into their own gardens, and working with a bespoke designer like Timber Rooms, who are based in West Sussex, is an excellent route to achieving a sauna space that truly suits your needs.
This recently completed sauna room project by Timber Rooms is a great example of their bespoke approach. Set by the beach, the building has been designed with both form and function in mind. The exterior is clad in Thermo Ayous, a durable, sustainable timber that offers a refined alternative to Western Red Cedar. The boards have been artfully laid in varying widths and directions, adding a subtle but eye-catching architectural quality to the design.
One of our favourite touches is the hinged slatted privacy screen, which can be opened or closed to provide discretion when using the outdoor shower. The screen sits under a canopy, giving a spa-like sense of seclusion. A row of handy robe hooks sits neatly next to the glazed entrance, reinforcing the thought that’s gone into every detail of the layout.
The grey composite decking surrounding the building has been chosen for its durability in this high-moisture area. Its muted tone complements the soft hues of the Thermo Ayous cladding, tying everything together with a calm and contemporary feel.
As part of their turnkey service, Timber Rooms handled all plumbing and electrics for the building—so everything from the sauna stove to the outdoor shower was installed as part of one seamless package.
Traditional Sauna, Modern Touches
Inside, the sauna measures 2m x 2m, creating a cosy but comfortable space for up to four people. The interior has been finished in a traditional style with matchboard cladding and bench seating. The full Finnish experience is present, with a Harvia stove, thermometer, sliding vent, and the classic wooden sauna ladle and water bowl, perfect for creating bursts of steam.
But tradition isn’t the only story here. Modern details have been discreetly integrated into the design, including low-energy LED lighting and Bluetooth speakers in the ceiling. These let users stream their favourite music or calming soundscapes directly from a phone while they unwind.
Whether you're coming back from a surf session, like the owners of this particular sauna, or simply looking to relax after a long day, the combination of authentic sauna heat and a cool blast from the outdoor shower is hard to beat.
