Bespoke Garden Office with Porch and Store

The owner of this garden room wanted a year-round, comfortable workspace and an area for social entertaining, including space for a smoker and other plug-in equipment. Garden Spaces designed a bespoke building that serves both uses and makes the most of a tight urban garden. The layout fills the end of the plot from boundary to boundary, with three sides against the boundaries and the front elevation facing out onto the main garden. The result is a 5.4m wide x 2.8m deep garden office with an integrated porch and store that serves all its intended uses.
A Workspace Ready From Day One
The main office is reached through a wide set of French doors. Inside, the space feels like a room in a new-build house: plastered and decorated walls and a dark laminate floor, with lighting, heating, and power points well specified throughout. The owner will have been able to plug in and start work as soon as the Garden Spaces team left the site. This is because Garden Spaces offer a turnkey service that includes the final electrical connection to the house, so the building is ready to use at handover rather than waiting for a separate electrician.
The office accommodates home working and basic gym equipment, giving the client a single building that supports both productivity and wellbeing. Alignment with the existing porcelain path was carefully considered so the new structure meets the hard landscaping cleanly and the transition from garden to building feels cohesive.
A Sheltered Porch for Outdoor Living
To the left of the main entrance, a stylish porch area leads to the store room which is 2.8sqm. The porch is lined in the same Western Red Cedar cladding as the main façade, with LED lights in the ceiling and a hidden cedar door that blends into the cedar wall and leads into the storage room. The porch is finished with a black composite deck, creating a weather-protected area that is ideal for the client’s smoker and other plug-in appliances. It works as a practical outdoor extension of the build: a sheltered spot for outdoor cooking or entertaining without compromising the look or function of the office.
Where the building sits close to boundaries, Garden Spaces often use cement particle boards on the boundary-facing walls. It requires no maintenance and is well suited to confined or boundary-tight sites where access for ongoing upkeep is limited.
From Design to Final Connection
The site was tight and the build worked close to the boundary, so planning and construction had to be carefully coordinated in a confined space. Part of the existing slab was extended using jack pad concrete pads to create a robust base for both the office and the adjoining store and porch. Garden Spaces managed the whole project from design conception through to the final connections, leaving the client with a ready-to-use building. For anyone considering a garden office on a limited plot, this project is a strong example of how a single bespoke design can combine work, storage, and outdoor entertaining without wasting an inch of space.
