Bespoke Garden Office Fills Irregular-Shaped Plot

New housing developments are often built with unusually shaped plots, where boundary lines meet at varied angles rather than forming neat rectangles. While these designs make the most of the available land, they can present challenges when it comes to adding a garden office. Trying to position a conventional square or rectangular building in such a space often results in wasted land around the perimeter and a smaller-than-necessary internal footprint.
This project by Executive Garden Rooms in Tisbury, Wiltshire, is a great example of how working with a bespoke designer can overcome this. Rather than compromising with a standard design, the building has been crafted to follow the angle of the boundary fence — maximising the usable internal space and avoiding awkward, hard-to-reach areas around the exterior.
Designed to Follow the Garden Boundary
The garden office has three corners set at 90 degrees — the rear wall, left-hand wall, and front wall. However, the right-hand wall has been designed to follow the angle of the boundary fence, resulting in a subtle but highly effective irregular footprint that nestles neatly against the double garage. With a footprint of 11.6sqm, this office is a great size for one person working from home.
Executive Garden Rooms arranged planning permission for the building, as Permitted Development rights were restricted for this new-build development — just one part of their full turnkey service.
Durable, Low-Maintenance Exterior
The exterior has been finished in off-white Cedral cladding, which complements the adjacent rendered garage. Cedral is a fibre cement board, known for its durability and dimensional stability. Unlike timber, it does not require repainting or retreating and is resistant to rot, pests, and UV damage. Even though access has been maintained between the garden office and the boundary fence, an office built to this specification will require little maintenance and will continue to look smart for years to come.
Glazing on Two Elevations
As the front wall is the shortest elevation, Executive Garden Rooms have incorporated a single outward-opening uPVC door. The outward opening door maintains the space in the room and opens out onto the garden. A wide, rectangular window has been placed high in the rear wall, allowing light to travel through the depth of the room and providing good cross ventilation when paired with the front door.
A compact canopy detail has been added to the front elevation, proving that this popular garden room feature can be successfully incorporated into smaller or irregularly shaped designs.
Finished to a High Specification
Like all Executive Garden Rooms buildings, this home office has been completed to a high internal specification. The walls and ceiling are fully plastered and decorated, creating a room that feels just like a space in the house. A bespoke electrical specification includes plenty of double power sockets, LED downlights, an external security light, Cat6 data point, smoke alarm, and a wall-mounted panel heater for year-round comfort.
Connections were made between the house and the garden office as part of the two-week build — part of Executive’s commitment to delivering a turnkey, stress-free solution.
Building Regulation Compliant Garden Office
This garden office was built using Executive’s traditional insulated timber frame system, which is designed to comply with Building Regulations. The insulation levels and quality of construction ensure comfortable use throughout the year — even in colder months.
