Artist Studio Garden Room in Warrington

This 5m x 3m garden room by Cosy Garden Rooms has been designed as a dedicated artist’s studio, giving its owner a calm, light-filled space to work year-round, set within the grounds of a large garden in Warrington. At 15 square metres, it’s a well-judged size for creative work, offering enough space to move freely, position easels and work surfaces, and still feel connected to the garden beyond.
A Carefully Considered Foundation Design
One of the most interesting aspects of this project is something you would never guess from the finished photographs. The garden includes a sunken brook, meaning flood risk had to be carefully considered at the foundation stage. Cosy Garden Rooms designed a raised concrete slab foundation to mitigate this risk and protect the building long term.
What’s particularly impressive is how discreet this solution is. Thanks to the way the cladding has been detailed and the addition of a neatly integrated deck step, the concrete base is completely hidden from view. The building sits comfortably within the garden, without looking raised or engineered, and the surrounding garden has been left in excellent condition - a good indication of the care taken during the on-site installation phase.
Maximising Natural Light for Creative Work
Natural light was central to the brief, and it has been handled thoughtfully. A set of sliding doors on the front elevation opens onto the decked step, with a roof canopy above providing a little shelter and visual definition to the entrance. This glazing brings generous daylight deep into the room and creates a strong connection between studio and garden.
At the rear of the building, two corner windows have been carefully positioned to capture light from a different aspect, helping to maintain consistent daylight throughout the day. They also frame views of the countryside beyond, giving the studio a sense of openness without distraction. Each corner window incorporates an opening section at high level, allowing the space to be easily ventilated when needed - a simple but practical detail for a working studio.
Low-Maintenance Materials with a Crisp Finish
Externally, the studio is clad in Hardie® Plank, a fibre cement weatherboard chosen for its durability and low-maintenance qualities. It will retain its colour and appearance over time without the need for repainting, making it a sensible long-term choice. The cladding is paired with anthracite grey doors, windows and trims, giving the building a clean, contemporary appearance that sits comfortably within the garden setting.
A Bright and Practical Interior
Inside, the studio is finished to Cosy Garden Rooms’ high standard. Their signature grooved wall panelling has been used throughout, paired with a smooth white ceiling that helps bounce light around the space. Recessed LED downlights are neatly integrated into the ceiling, providing even light for detailed work at any time of day.
The finish is completed with laminate flooring, and the electrical specification has been tailored to suit the owner’s working requirements. As with all of their projects, Cosy Garden Rooms handled the final electrical connection between the garden room and the house as part of their turnkey service, simplifying the process for the homeowner.
A Studio Shaped Around How the Owner Works
It’s a pleasure to see how the owner has furnished and set up her new studio, transforming it into a space that clearly supports her creative process. We’ve featured several art studios by Cosy Garden Rooms over the years, and together they show how effectively the team can tailor each building around how someone likes to work - from managing natural light to responding to the specific character of the garden.
