Returning clients are often the strongest endorsement of a garden room company’s work. In this woodland garden in Poole, Dorset, the new owners’ decision to commission a third building from Executive Garden Rooms speaks volumes about the quality, longevity, and value of the original designs.
Following the successful completion of a home gym, office, and quiet reading retreat in 2022, this latest addition was designed as a dedicated art studio. The brief was clear: create a bright, inspiring workspace that would sit comfortably alongside the existing buildings and feel entirely at home within the wooded setting.
Here are the garden rooms completed in the first project:
Designed To Complement The Existing Garden Rooms
Rather than introducing a new architectural language, the art studio continues the established palette of materials and finishes used across the site. Externally, black composite weatherboard cladding mirrors the earlier buildings, allowing the structure to recede gently into the woodland backdrop while maintaining a cohesive visual identity.
The new studio measures 7m x 4m and adopts a contemporary pent roofline. This not only complements the earlier garden rooms but also allows the internal ceiling to slope upwards to its highest point at the front of the building, creating a generous sense of volume that suits the creative nature of the space.
A Light-Filled Studio
Natural light plays a central role in the design of this garden room. The studio is flooded with daylight from multiple directions, creating an open, uplifting environment that works equally well as a working studio or a space to display finished pieces.
Two corners of the building are glazed to strengthen the connection with the surrounding trees. One corner incorporates a glazed door paired with a full-height fixed window, while the opposite corner mirrors this arrangement without the door. Along the rear elevation, facing deeper into the woodland, a wide glazed section is formed from two full-height fixed panels, flanked by windows with opening top sections to provide controlled ventilation.
Overhead, a large rooflight introduces top-level daylight, adding another layer of natural illumination and reinforcing the studio’s light, gallery-like feel throughout the day.
Interior Finishes And Lighting For Creative Use
Inside, the studio continues the same high standard of finish seen in the earlier garden rooms on the site. Walls and ceilings are plastered and decorated in a clean, neutral palette, providing a calm backdrop for artwork and creative activity. A quality laminate wood floor offers durability and practicality without detracting from the overall aesthetic.
Lighting has been carefully considered, with a mix of fittings providing both strong working light and focused illumination to highlight key pieces. This layered approach allows the space to adapt easily between active studio use and quieter moments of reflection or display.
The building sits on a solid raft concrete foundation, chosen for its long-term durability and stability. This robust approach also eliminates the risk of nesting rodents or foxes, an important consideration when building within a wooded environment.
As with the earlier garden rooms, careful attention was paid to how the studio sits within the landscape. Executive Garden Rooms supported the surrounding landscaping works, using traditional sleepers to retain levels and frame the building, ensuring it feels firmly grounded within its natural setting.
A Testament To Quality And Continuity
This art studio completes a trio of garden rooms that together support work, wellbeing, and creativity within the same property. The fact that new owners chose to return to Executive Garden Rooms to extend the original vision underlines the lasting appeal of a well-designed, well-built garden room.
Rather than standing apart, the studio feels like a natural continuation of the earlier project - consistent in materials, thoughtful in its detailing, and tailored precisely to its new purpose.
