The Lowlander range by JML Garden Rooms has long impressed with its strong, architectural form and palette of high-quality materials. Each building is designed in collaboration with the client, ensuring it is tailored to their intended use and the unique characteristics of their site. This bespoke project in Edinburgh demonstrates just how versatile the Lowlander can be.
Tailored Design for Relaxation, Entertaining & Everyday Use
The clients were looking to transform an underused, shady corner of their garden into a multi-functional retreat. Their vision was to create a space that would serve as a cinema room, complete with automated blackout blinds, alongside a kitchenette, shower room, and generous wrap-around decking to extend the usable space outdoors. The result is a 26sqm garden room that feels like a natural extension of the newly landscaped garden.
JML Garden Rooms worked closely with the clients and their landscape designer to ensure the new building would integrate seamlessly with the overall garden redesign.
Striking Form & Thoughtful Material Choices
The design features a striking corner configuration of glazing, combining aluminium bi-fold doors with a tall picture window set level with the deck. This combination creates an effortless flow between inside and out. Rectangular opening windows provide additional ventilation and natural light, ensuring the space feels bright and connected to its surroundings.
Externally, the dark grey doors, windows, and roof kerb complement the rich reddish-brown tones of vertically fixed Western Red Cedar cladding. The vertical orientation of the cladding accentuates the clean lines and crisp detailing that define the Lowlander’s aesthetic.
Interior Comforts & Finishing Touches
Inside, the garden room is finished to the same high standard as a newly built house. Plastered and decorated walls, combined with the large glazed sections, create a light-filled, inviting space that can be enjoyed year-round, regardless of the weather outside.
Practical features such as the bespoke kitchen—designed and fitted in partnership with Cameron Interiors—and a discreet storage area to the rear of the building ensure the garden room is as functional as it is stylish.
Overcoming Challenges: Groundworks & Services
The installation required careful planning due to the varied levels introduced by the garden landscaping. Ground screw foundations were used, with some reaching depths of up to 2m. JML Garden Rooms also managed the necessary upgrades to the site’s electrical connections, coordinating with external providers to keep the project on schedule.
A Complete Turnkey Solution
JML Garden Rooms delivered a full turnkey service, managing every stage from design through to completion. Their in-house architectural team prepared the designs and handled the Planning and Building Warrant applications. The civils team installed foundations, drainage, and service ducts, while the construction team assembled and finished the garden room on site. All trades, including specialist kitchen fitters, were coordinated by JML to provide a seamless experience for the client.
