Indoor-Outdoor Garden Room by Vita Modular

Pairing a fully insulated garden room with a sheltered outdoor area is becoming an increasingly popular way to build. Rather than a room you dip in and out of, you get a year-round space that can be enjoyed whatever the weather — somewhere to work, somewhere to sit out under cover, and a natural flow between the two. This project by Vita Modular in St Albans is a great example, and it showcases the stylish architectural form you can create with the pressed steel exterior cladding finish that Vita Modular offer. It makes a real focal point at the end of this garden.
The Pressed Steel Exterior
Vita Modular build around an insulated steel framework and offer a wide palette of exterior finishes. This client opted for dark grey pressed steel panels, colour-matched to the two sets of sliding doors that form the glazed corner. The same finish has been carried across the back wall of the outdoor area, so the material reads as one continuous idea rather than a room with a canopy tacked on. The vertical lines of the standing seams are stylish in their simplicity — clean, contemporary, and quietly confident against the planting. Overhead, an EPDM roof keeps the building weathertight with a low-maintenance, single-membrane covering well suited to the flat form.
The building sits on a footprint of 4m x 4.3m. The insulated room and the sheltered outdoor area sit side by side beneath a single roof, designed as one cohesive space.
The Glazed Corner
The two sets of sliding doors meet to wrap glazing around the corner of the building. It's a detail that does a lot of work. When the doors are closed, the corner floods the room with light and keeps the garden in view from almost anywhere inside. When they're slid open, the corner effectively disappears, and the room and the covered outdoor area become one free-flowing indoor-outdoor space.
Inside the Room
The insulated room is finished like a new build house. The walls and ceiling are decorated throughout, and the floor is laid in LVT in the owner's choice of finish — the kind of specification that makes a garden room feel like a proper extension of the home rather than an outbuilding.
The floor plan has been divided to create a cloakroom with a toilet and basin, connected to the house's mains supply. In the recess created by the cloakroom, a kitchen and bar area has been fitted, creating a focal point in the room. The electrics are tailored to the space, with sockets, lighting, and provision planned in collaboration with the owner, around how the room will actually be used, rather than dropped in as standard.
The result is a very versatile space for the family — room to work day to day, and somewhere that comes into its own for entertaining. With the doors slid open, the free-flowing connection between inside and out is exactly what makes this kind of building work all year round.
