3m x 3m Garden Room with Mixed Cladding Finishes

Reading Time: 2 minutes 30 seconds
This contemporary 3m x 3m garden room by Executive Garden Rooms shows how a compact footprint can still feel generous and versatile. Positioned in a newly landscaped garden in Lymington, it provides a calm place to sit, read, work, or unwind beside the hot tub area.
Although only nine square metres, there is ample space for a small sofa and additional chairs. The room could be furnished as a garden sitting room, a quiet home office, a hobby or craft space, or simply a calm place to read and enjoy the garden. Outward-opening French doors frame views back across the garden and open directly onto the surrounding paving, reinforcing the sense of connection with the new planting and outdoor living areas.
Light, Views and Easy Ventilation
Glazing has been planned to balance light and views. The French doors draw the eye towards the newly landscaped garden and hot tub area, making the room a key part of the wider scheme.
On the right-hand wall, a tall window has been positioned to frame another garden view. Its opening top section allows the owners to ventilate the room easily without relying on the doors being open, which is useful throughout the year.
Year-Round Specification and Turnkey Finish
As with all Executive Garden Rooms projects, this building is designed for year-round use. The fully insulated, multi-layer wall and roof build-up is the same as traditional timber-frame house construction rather than a lightweight seasonal structure, helping the interior to stay comfortable for use in all seasons.
Inside, the room is finished to a high specification, with plastered and decorated walls and ceiling and a quality floor finish that makes it feel like an additional room in the house. The electrical layout includes power sockets and LED lighting, with the final electrical connection back to the main house handled by Executive Garden Rooms as part of their turnkey service. The result is a fully finished space that is ready to use as soon as the team leaves site.
Cedar and Hardie Plank for Low Maintenance
A lot of the character here comes from the clients’ choice of cladding. On the two garden-facing elevations, they selected Western Red Cedar, installed vertically to emphasise the contemporary cubist form and to bring warmth and texture to the main views back from the house and terrace. The timber has been treated with UV protection oil to help slow the natural colour change to silver and extend the life of its rich reddish-brown tones.
For the side and rear elevations, the specification switches to Hardie Plank fibre cement boards, carefully colour-matched to the windows and doors. This combination keeps the most visible faces in natural cedar while ensuring the less prominent sides are extremely low-maintenance: Hardie Plank does not require regular repainting, is resistant to rot and pests, and will continue to perform with minimal upkeep. Together, the materials create a building that feels considered from every angle while keeping long-term maintenance demands modest.
Client Feedback
Feedback from the landscaping partner involved in the wider garden scheme underlines the quality of both the build and the process:
We have used Executive Garden Rooms on two separate occasions now and it has been absolutely seamless. John and Ali are very professional and the builds are second to none — fantastic attention to detail in everything they do. John takes great pride in his work and it shows in the finished article.”
