Year-Round Garden Sitting Room in Poole

A garden sitting room offers something a summerhouse rarely can: a space you can use in comfort in every season. This 4m x 3m building in Poole, Dorset, was designed by Executive Garden Rooms as a tranquil retreat for reading and relaxation. Built to Building Regulation standards, it performs more like a room in a new-build house than a seasonal outbuilding.
As bespoke designers, Executive Garden Rooms tailor each project to the individual client and the garden. Here, that meant creating 12sqm of light-filled space, with a carefully considered corner of glazing and an interior finished to the same standard you would expect indoors.
A Low-Maintenance Exterior That Lasts
The exterior is finished in off-white Hardie Plank cladding, which forms a smart contrast with the black uPVC glazed corner. Hardie Plank is a fibre cement board chosen for its durability and low maintenance; it does not need regular repainting or retreating and is resistant to rot, pests, and UV exposure.
Paired with quality uPVC glazing, this combination creates a building designed to last — an important consideration when the aim is a relaxed, year-round retreat rather than a structure that demands ongoing upkeep.
A Room Equivalent to One in the House
Executive Garden Rooms build to Building Regulation standards, with a multi-layer wall structure that delivers insulation and airtightness comparable to a house. Inside, the result is a room that genuinely feels equivalent to one in the main building, with plastered and decorated walls and ceiling and laminate flooring underfoot.
The owners have added a feature wallpaper wall, a perfect choice for a tranquil garden setting and a reminder that, with this level of finish, the space can be styled and personalised just like any other room at home.
Electrics and heating are specified to support everyday use. Electrical connections to the main house include LED downlights, a smoke alarm, a thermostatic panel heater, and multiple power sockets — ensuring the room remains comfortable and practical whether used briefly with a book or for longer, slower afternoons.
Views and Ventilation from a Glazed Corner
From the sofa, the owners enjoy views into the heart of the garden thanks to the corner configuration of glazing. A centre-meeting sliding door is paired with a window featuring a top-opening section, wrapping around the corner to create a bright, airy atmosphere with excellent ventilation.
Integral blinds are fitted within the sealed glass units and operated by a discreet magnetic control bar, allowing light and airflow to be adjusted easily without interrupting the clean lines of the glazing.
Build and Client Feedback
The project was completed in just two and a half weeks. Client feedback reflects the full turnkey nature of the service, from clear floor plans and schedules through to a smooth, well-managed build on site. They said:
Paul and I can not recommend Executive Garden Rooms enough they are an amazing company.
Alison was very professional and friendly as she helped us through the design process of our garden room, offering information and advice.
We were provided with a floor plan of the build and a time table of the material deliveries with a schedule of work to be completed each day. Everything was so well managed and ran like clockwork from the material deliveries to the construction and completion of our garden room.
John was hard working approachable and polite, a genuinely lovely person. His standard of work is exceptional paying attention to every little detail. We could not believe how quickly he worked. He was amazing!
Their sub-contractors {electrician/roofer and plasterer} were equally skilled, respectful, professional and friendly.
We are absolutely over the moon with our new garden room it’s exactly what we asked for.
We are so pleased that we chose Alison and John for our garden room project. A Big Thank You to Both of You.
