L-Shaped Garden Room With Canopy for Year-Round Living

This bespoke project by Cosy Garden Rooms shows how a carefully considered layout, combined with the right finishes and materials, can create a garden building that works effortlessly for everyday life.
Designed as an L-shaped configuration, the building brings together a fully insulated garden room and a generous covered canopy, creating a flexible indoor–outdoor space that can be enjoyed throughout the year - whether for work, relaxing with family, or entertaining friends.
A Layout Designed Around How the Space Will Be Used
As with many of Cosy Garden Rooms’ projects, the design started with how the clients wanted to use the space rather than forcing their requirements into a standard footprint. Both owners work from home, but the brief went well beyond a simple garden office.
The L-shaped layout naturally divides the building into two complementary areas: an enclosed, insulated garden room for year-round comfort, and a large covered canopy that extends the living space outdoors. Together, they form a connected but versatile environment that adapts easily to different activities and seasons.
In total, the L-shaped design provides around 30 square metres of fully insulated internal space, complemented by a further 30 square metres of covered canopy, giving the owners plenty of room to work, relax and entertain without the building feeling dominant within the garden.
Creating A Strong Indoor–Outdoor Connection
The way the glazing has been arranged plays a key role in how this garden room feels. Doors and windows have been positioned to create clear views from the main room out into the garden and across into the covered canopy.
Large doors between the insulated room and the canopy allow easy movement between inside and outside, making the transition feel natural and intuitive. Even when closed, the visual connection remains, reinforcing the sense that the garden is very much part of the living space.
A Solid Foundation On Sloping Ground
This project also highlights how Cosy Garden Rooms deal with more challenging sites. The concrete slab foundation system they use has overcome the sloping ground, creating a solid, level base for the entire building.
Around the canopy area, the Anthracite Grey skirt to the composite decking has been carefully detailed to follow the natural ground gradient. It’s a neat solution that allows the building to sit comfortably within the landscape while maintaining clean lines and a balanced appearance.
Contemporary Finishes With Long-Term Practicality
The garden room has a strong contemporary look, combining Anthracite Grey finishes with Spiced Oak vertical slatted cladding. The contrast between the two materials adds interest without overpowering the garden setting.
It’s particularly effective how the Spiced Oak slatted cladding has been carried through to line the rear walls of the canopy area. This continuity helps visually link the insulated and outdoor spaces, giving the whole structure a cohesive, architectural feel.
The exterior palette of composite materials also means the building will require very little ongoing maintenance, while maintaining its colour and appearance over the long term - an important consideration for a garden room designed for regular, everyday use.
Integrated LED lighting in the canopy ceiling casts a soft, even light over the outdoor dining and seating areas, making the space just as inviting in the evening as it is during the day.
A Self-Contained Garden Room With Shower Room
Adding to the building’s flexibility is a compact shower room within the insulated garden room. Featuring a corner shower, stylish vanity unit and toilet, it allows the space to be used independently from the main house.
This makes long workdays, entertaining guests, or family gatherings far more practical - and gives the garden room the feel of a genuinely self-contained retreat rather than an occasional-use space.
A Comfortable Space For Work, Relaxing And Entertaining
Inside the main room, Cosy Garden Rooms’ signature grooved panel wall finish is paired with a white ceiling and durable laminate flooring. The result is a bright, modern interior that feels comfortable all year round.
It’s a space that works just as well as a focused home office as it does for watching TV or spending time with family and friends - exactly the kind of versatility that makes a well-designed garden room such a valuable addition to the home.
