Sleek and Low-Maintenance: Composite-Clad Garden Rooms

Composite wood cladding has become an increasingly popular choice for garden rooms. Made from a mix of wood fibres and recycled polymers, it offers the texture and warmth of timber with the advantage of being low-maintenance and long-lasting. It doesn’t require regular oiling or staining, and its colour won’t fade or silver over time, making it a great alternative to natural timbers like Western Red Cedar.
While Cedar remains a durable and beautiful option, it will gradually weather to a silvery-grey if not maintained. Composite cladding, on the other hand, retains its rich tone year after year, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer a bold, consistent look.
Using a single colour for all the exterior finishes — from the cladding to the decking, doors, and window frames — creates a dramatic, contemporary aesthetic. The dark grey and black shades are especially effective, producing a strong architectural statement that complements a wide range of garden settings.
Many designers are choosing to fix the boards vertically to emphasise height and pair them with matching composite decks, doors, and window frames in similar tones for a unified, modern finish.
Modern Garden Rooms Do Composite Cladding Well
One company using these finishes to great effect is Modern Garden Rooms, who offer composite wood materials as one of the exterior finish options across their garden room ranges. The composite boards form the outer layer of their multi-layer insulated construction system, which includes full insulation and double glazing for comfortable year-round use.
This combination of durable composite exteriors and thermally efficient core structure makes their buildings both stylish and low maintenance.
We’ve been following their Instagram feed, where Modern Garden Rooms have shared examples of their Canopy and Cube ranges finished in charcoal composite cladding. The consistent colour scheme and clean detailing show how effective this approach can be, creating contemporary rooms that blend practicality with design flair.
The Canopy Range
The Canopy Range features an attractive roof overhang on the front elevation — a design detail that gives the building extra depth and shade. The depth of the canopy can be tailored to suit your preferences; some examples feature a shallow overhang, while others extend up to 750mm, complete with integrated downlights that provide subtle illumination after dark.
Many clients have also chosen to add composite decking in the same colour as the cladding, creating either a small step or a veranda-style platform that’s perfect for a couple of chairs, a coffee table, or flower planters. The matching finishes between cladding and decking create a seamless, coordinated look.
6m x 3m Composite Canopy Room
This design features a 750mm deep canopy running along the full front elevation, fitted with downlights that cast a soft evening glow. A 300mm deep composite deck runs the length of the building.
5m x 3m Composite Canopy Room
This example also includes a 750mm canopy with downlights, but here the deck matches it in depth — providing space for a small table, a couple of chairs, or some decorative pots.
3m x 3.5m Composite Canopy Room
Even at a smaller scale, the design works beautifully. This 3m x 3.5m garden room features a 500mm canopy paired with a 300mm deep step beneath the doors, creating a balanced design.
The Cube Range
The Cube Range, as its name suggests, is defined by clean lines and a more cubist form, with no roof overhang. The vertical lines of the composite cladding emphasise the building’s geometry, while the crisp edges of the cube profile give it a contemporary architectural feel.
5.5m x 3.5m Composite Cube Room
Finished in charcoal composite cladding on the front and sides, this cube design features corrugated panels on the rear elevation, which look equally striking and provide excellent durability.
6.9m x 4.8m Composite-Clad Cube
This larger Cube model also features vertical charcoal composite cladding, with a smart arrangement of glazing that floods the interior with natural light. A 1m deep composite deck extends along the front, with a matching step to accommodate the sloping ground — a practical and stylish detail.
