Beach Hut Annexe by Timeless Garden Rooms

Beach Hut Annexe by Timeless Garden Rooms

Published: 5 September 2025
Reading Time: 3 minutes

We have often featured garden rooms that were inspired by the beach hut aesthetic, but this project marks the first time we’ve shared an actual beach hut. Not that this is any ordinary hut — it’s a fully insulated, high-spec annexe designed for comfortable year-round use on the coast, rather than the rear garden of a property as we normally see.

Timeless Garden Rooms are one of the longest-established names in the industry and are highly experienced in designing complex annexe projects. They handle the entire process for their clients, from design through to planning approvals and construction, delivering a turnkey building that’s ready to move straight into. This project shows just how adaptable their approach can be when working with a sensitive coastal site.

Replacing the Old Chalet

The new 30sqm chalet replaced an old, dated building that had reached the end of its life. Because of the challenging coastal location, specialist foundations were required. The Timeless team installed substantial round concrete piles to provide a stable base before construction could begin. With the groundwork completed, the new annexe could be safely built on this coastal site.

Exterior in Keeping with Local Rules

The local residents’ association required the new building to adopt a traditional appearance. This aligned perfectly with Timeless Garden Rooms’ design style. The exterior is finished in feather edge cladding painted in a soft cream tone, with double-glazed French doors and windows that flood the interior with light.

At the seaward side, a generous deck extends living space outdoors, fitted with a chunky rope balustrade that feels completely at home in the coastal surroundings. Reclaimed marine lanterns add character and warmth. The French doors open directly onto this deck, creating a natural inside–outside flow and framing sea views.

At the opposite gable end, a single door leads to a smaller deck, giving the annexe dual access points.

A Layout Designed for Comfortable Living

The interior of the annexe is divided into three rooms, making the most of the compact footprint. Space-saving details were carefully considered, for instance, a sliding barn-style door leads into the shower room, ensuring no wasted floor area.

The vaulted ceiling gives the main living area an open, airy feel and allows for feature pendant lighting. Reclaimed internal doors connect the rooms, while careful detailing throughout adds a hand crafted finish.

Characterful Interior Finishes

Each room includes a feature wall of shaker-style panelling, topped with traditional shaker pegs along the uprights where they meet the vaulted ceiling — a charming detail that adds both function and style.

The kitchen area features a converted dresser, cleverly repurposed to incorporate a Victorian bowl sink with bib taps, alongside a taller reclaimed unit for additional storage. The rustic flooring was created from reclaimed timber, reworked into durable boards that enhance the coastal chalet character.

The shower room is finished in painted matchboard panelling, adding texture to the compact space. Victorian-style sanitaryware, including a classic WC and basin, has been paired with period-style bronze switches, sockets, and fittings. Even in this small room, feature lighting has been chosen to complement the textures and reclaimed elements, creating a space that feels both practical and beautifully detailed.

A Coastal Annexe with Character

This building may carry the name of a beach hut, but it has been designed and built to the same high standards as Timeless Garden Rooms’ other annexes. Fully insulated, plumbed, and wired for year-round use, it demonstrates how reclaimed detailing and thoughtful design can create a one-of-a-kind coastal retreat.

The result is not just a replacement building but a move-in ready annexe that reflects both the client’s lifestyle and the surrounding environment.
