Garden Spaces has long been known for their ability to create bespoke buildings that seamlessly align with each client’s unique needs. This pottery studio project is a prime example of their skill in designing a workspace tailored to the client's specific requirements. Rather than asking clients to conform to standard designs and specifications, Garden Spaces works around individual needs, resulting in highly customised spaces. The outcome here is a beautifully light-filled and practical pottery studio, where the owner can focus on growing her successful ceramics business.
Understanding the Client’s Needs
A pottery studio requires careful consideration of both functional and aesthetic elements. The client needed a space that was not only inviting and light-filled but also robust enough to support heavy equipment, shelving for finished pieces, and a practical workspace. Durability was key, as was maximising usable space without compromising on natural light.
Thoughtful Design and Detailed Planning
Garden Spaces worked closely with the client through an iterative design process to ensure every aspect of the layout met her needs. A key part of their service includes preparing detailed plans and a 3D model of the proposed building. These scale models help clients visualise the space and are particularly useful for planning the placement of furniture, machinery, and shelving. In this project, the model assisted in optimally positioning the workbenches, potter’s wheel, kilns, and metres of shelving required for finished pieces.
Maximising Natural Light
Natural light is essential in a creative space, and this studio benefits from a carefully considered glazing design. A set of glazed French doors, paired with two opening windows on the front elevation, provide good light while framing views of the garden. The windows were positioned at bench height to allow the client to enjoy garden views while working. To maintain wall and workspace functionality, a 1.5m x 1m roof light was incorporated, offering a clever solution that floods the space with daylight without encroaching on valuable wall space.
Engineering for Heavy Equipment and Storage
A key consideration in the design of this pottery studio was the need to support significant weight. The studio houses two kilns, each weighing a substantial amount, requiring a reinforced floor structure. Garden Spaces worked closely with their SIP suppliers to ensure the floor was robust enough to handle these loads. In addition, the walls needed to be strong enough to support twin-slot shelving, with each shelf carrying up to 6kg and full-length units supporting as much as 50kg. To accommodate these demands, the walls were clad in 18mm hardwood plywood, providing both structural integrity and a practical, easy-to-maintain surface.
Tailored Electrical Specification
Garden Spaces carefully tailored the electrical specification to meet the demands of a working pottery studio. The kilns required dedicated cut-out switching for safe operation, while several strip lights were installed to ensure optimal artificial lighting for detailed work. As seen in the images, sockets have been strategically positioned for different tasks, including using the potter’s wheel, operating the kilns, and powering tools at the standing workbench.
Unlike competitors who offer a standard electrical specification and ask clients to organise the connection of the studio’s electrics to the mains supply, Garden Spaces takes a more comprehensive approach. They work with each client to ensure the electrics are designed around the intended use and the positioning of furniture. Additionally, they handle the final connection between the house and the garden room, ensuring that as soon as the installation team leaves site.
A Robust Interior Finish
While Garden Spaces typically offers a plastered and decorated interior, a more durable solution was needed for this studio. Their buildings are constructed using high-quality Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), which offer strength and excellent thermal efficiency. Given the weight of the shelving and pottery, additional reinforcement was required. The walls were clad in 18mm hardwood plywood, meticulously installed by Garden Spaces’ skilled carpenters to ensure crisp, clean joints. The result is a stylish yet highly practical finish that enhances the studio's durability and functionality.
Exterior Finishes & Lighting
The studio’s exterior is just as thoughtfully designed. The roof extends beyond the front wall to create a canopy, providing a striking design feature while offering practical shelter. Exterior-grade LED downlights have been fitted into the underside of the canopy, casting an attractive and useful light over the entrance. A composite decked area extends out from the studio, mirroring the canopy and providing an easy-access entrance.
A Comprehensive ‘One Stop Shop’ Service
Garden Spaces prides itself on offering a comprehensive service that covers the entire project, from initial design through to final completion. Unlike some companies that leave clients to arrange foundations and service connections separately, Garden Spaces manages everything, ensuring a seamless experience. For this project, they handled all aspects, including the foundation work, reinforced floor construction, bespoke electrical layout, and final service connections, delivering a fully functional and ready-to-use pottery studio.
