Rustic Yoga Studio with Storeroom

Rustic Yoga Studio with Storeroom

If you explore our archive of articles on Rustic Realities, you’ll notice that Lee possesses a remarkable skill for designing modern, insulated garden rooms that exude rustic charm. Specialising in bespoke design, Lee collaborates closely with each client to create a building that complements their garden space and meets their intended use, incorporating the rustic elements they desire.

For this yoga studio project, Lee worked hand-in-hand with the clients to develop a serene space for practising yoga, away from the stresses of modern life. Additionally, the clients wanted to integrate storage into the design. After careful consideration, they decided on a 6m x 3m building. A partition wall was installed, creating two rooms, each with its own external access. The 3D model that Lee created allowed the clients to visualise the final design.

A variety of finishes have been used on the exterior of the garden room, each adding a distinct texture and layer of character to the design. These finishes, which include Oak and Cedar, offer long maintenance-free lifespans. They can be left to weather to a silvery grey colour without affecting the durability of the materials.

Oak Weatherboard and Cedar Shingles

Externally, Rustic Realities have clad three of the walls with character-grade oak weatherboard. A feature wall has been created on one end using Western Red Cedar shingles. We particularly appreciate how Lee has staggered the ends of the shingles, rather than fitting them in straight lines, adding interest to the wall.

The timber finishes are complemented by Anthracite Grey uPVC doors and windows. In the yoga studio, a 2.6m wide set of sliding doors was selected to allow as much natural light into the room as possible. On the end wall, a three-section casement window with Georgian bar detailing has been installed. Casement windows are easy to open, allowing for good ventilation in the room.

Rustic Realities have incorporated exterior lighting into the design. Industrial-style caged lights have been fitted next to the doors, and an LED strip light has been installed in the roof soffit to illuminate the Cedar shingle feature wall. This lighting casts a beautiful glow down the wall, highlighting the texture of the shingles.

Eco-Friendly Insulation

The garden room is well-insulated for comfortable year-round use. A combination of Thermafleece sheep wool insulation in the walls and ceiling, and Hybris closed-cell insulation in the floor structure, has been used. Thermafleece not only helps keep the garden room warm in winter and cool in summer but also aids in moisture control within the building.

For the coldest days of the year, an anthracite electric column radiator has been installed.

Tailor-Made Interior

It’s not just the exterior of the garden room that the Rustic Realities team has tailored to the client's ideas; they have also added stylish details to the interior space. The walls have been painted with a suede-effect paint chosen to complement the dark grey engineered wood flooring.

A bespoke shelving unit has been designed to house the owner's meditation sound bowls. The shelving, built around the column radiator, is made from reclaimed scaffolding boards.

Custom Storage Solutions

As mentioned earlier, the garden room has been divided to create two rooms. The second room serves as a storage space with its own external access. We love the design detail that Lee and his clients created by infilling the door with a reclaimed corrugated metal roofing panel. The heavy patina of the corrugated sheet adds unique character.

The interior of the storeroom has been lined with OSB boards. OSB is an excellent choice for lining a storeroom as it is highly durable, supports storage systems well, and can withstand heavy use.

As the build progressed, the clients requested the addition of a ladder and garden tool storage area. This has been positioned at the rear of the building and is cleverly concealed by a wall of Cedar shingles.
