Garden rooms have always been favoured as creative spaces, offering the flexibility to be customised according to the artist's specific needs. With careful placement of doors, windows, and skylights, a naturally light workspace can be created, complete with stunning views of the garden to inspire creativity.
A well-constructed garden room is a multi-layered structure, built using materials and techniques similar to those used in timber-framed homes. This ensures a highly insulated environment, perfect for year-round use and reliable storage of materials in optimal conditions.
Bespoke Pottery Studio by Garden2Office
This pottery studio by Garden2Office is a customised version of their popular Malmö range. The Malmö design features a dual-pitched roofline that creates a vaulted ceiling inside, enhancing the spacious feel of the room. As demonstrated in the video tour, this configuration provides an inviting workspace with ample room for a kiln and sink.
Garden2Office collaborates closely with clients to develop layouts that meet their requirements, incorporating bespoke features and materials to achieve the desired style. In this project, the clients requested an additional room for current storage use, designed with the potential to be converted into a shower room in the future.
Customised Electrical Features
Unlike many garden room providers that offer only standard electrical packages with fixed switch positions, Garden2Office tailors the electrical layout to suit specific needs. For this pottery studio, the clients provided a detailed plan for task and mood lighting placement, and sourced designer lighting and switches, which the Garden2Office team expertly fitted.
Planning Approval Adaptations
While many garden studios can be built under Permitted Development rights, this particular project required Planning Approval due to its location in a built-up area of East London. Garden2Office addressed planning requirements by designing an asymmetrical pitched roofline, positioning the ridge off-centre to lower the overall roof height. Additionally, a skylight was placed on the roof side facing away from neighbouring properties.
To further meet planning conditions, the team dug down into the garden, effectively reducing the overall building height.
This project is an excellent example of how experienced garden room designers, such as Garden2Office, can adapt their designs to meet Local Authority Planning Department requirements while staying true to their client's vision.
Future-Proof Design Elements
Forward-thinking was a key component of this pottery studio’s design. The storage room has been built with waterproof boards and equipped with an electrical feed and extractor fan, allowing for an easy conversion into a shower room when needed.
Stylish Exterior Finishes
The exterior of this pottery studio features an appealing combination of finishes. The natural green tones of a well-planted garden will beautifully contrast with the white walls, as suggested by the palm shown in the Instagram carousel.
The batten and board appearance was created using marine plywood and treated battens, while the thin-framed bi-fold doors, finished in a custom RAL colour, allow seamless indoor-outdoor flow.
The boundary-facing walls have been clad in fire-resistant cladding, offering a low-maintenance, durable solution perfect for hard-to-reach areas.
