With more of us working remotely, a dedicated garden office is an increasingly popular solution. A short stroll down the garden path helps maintain the discipline of leaving the house for work, while still enjoying the perks of working from home.
Hargreaves Garden Spaces recently designed this elegant 5m wide by 2.5m deep garden office for a London couple transitioning to permanent remote work. Following their company’s shift to a remote working model, the couple sought a purpose-built solution that included additional storage—a customisation Hargreaves Garden Spaces was happy to provide.
Narrow Garden Office Design
At 5m x 2.5m, this structure makes efficient use of space. Its width complements the proportions of a garden wider than it is deep, ensuring the office doesn’t overshadow the outdoor area.
The building is cleverly divided into two sections: a bright, functional office and a discreet storage room. The office features 3-metre wide aluminium bi-fold doors, which fold away neatly to open the workspace directly onto the garden—perfect for enjoying summer days.
The storage room is accessed via a secret door seamlessly integrated into the building’s cladding. This concealed entrance, located to the right of the bi-fold doors, blends perfectly into the exterior, adding an extra layer of security for items such as bikes, lawnmowers, and tools.
Scandinavian Redwood Cladding
The exterior is clad in Scandinavian Redwood, a durable and cost-effective material treated to resist rot and fungal decay. Its honey-toned finish will weather gracefully to a mellow silver over time. This makes it an appealing alternative to Western Red Cedar, Thermowood, or Larch, while offering significant savings for other premium features—such as the aluminium bi-fold doors used in this design.
The contrast between the warm tones of the wood and the sleek dark grey bi-folds creates a stylish, modern aesthetic that complements the garden setting beautifully.
A Seamless, Start-to-Finish Service
One of the key features of working with Hargreaves Garden Spaces is their comprehensive service. In this project, they handled everything, including connecting the office’s electrics to the house mains—an often-overlooked detail that other companies may leave for you to arrange separately.
In addition to constructing the building, Hargreaves also offers landscaping services. For this project, they returned to install a patio and fencing, providing a complete solution that eliminates the need for multiple contractors. Their 360-degree approach ensures convenience, quality, and peace of mind.
