This project by Executive Garden Rooms demonstrates how a comfortable, homely one-bedroom property can be built at the end of the garden. The well-specified 32.24m² garden annexe has provided a home for an 84-year-old gentleman, allowing him to maintain his independence while living close to his family.
Executive Garden Rooms are well known for creating self-contained garden homes. Over the years, we have featured several of their projects, which show how, rather than offering set floor plans and finishes, they tailor each annexe to suit the client’s specific requirements and the available garden space.
They offer a comprehensive, turnkey service, working closely with clients from the initial design through to the final touches. This project-managed service includes handling the planning application, carrying out groundworks, connecting the annexe to the mains services, and ensuring everything is signed off by Building Control.
6.2m x 5.2m Garden Annexe with Kitchen & Shower Room
The annexe has a near-square footprint, measuring 6.2m wide by 5.2m deep. Inside, the space has been designed to include one bedroom, an open-plan living area with a kitchenette, and a spacious shower room. There is also a cupboard housing the pressurised water tank.
While some of the annexes by Executive Garden Rooms feature larger kitchens, this example has a compact, well-equipped kitchenette. Modern high-gloss cabinets provide plenty of storage and house an oven, hob, extractor fan, and sink.
The kitchenette has been cleverly positioned between the utility cupboard and a bookcase area, making efficient use of space while maintaining a stylish look.
The annexe includes a modern shower room, and unlike many compact annexes, this one offers plenty of room to move around. At one end of the room, a 1400mm shower has been installed, which is larger than the typical size found in similar buildings. The toilet is a comfort-height model, making it easier for older people to use. Attention to details like this enhances everyday living.
Hot water for the kitchen and shower room is supplied by a 125-litre pressurised cylinder, ensuring consistent water pressure throughout the annexe, even if water is being used in the main house.
A pumping station was installed as there was insufficient fall to carry sewage waste to the manhole, which is located at the rear of the main house.
A Light, Modern Garden Home
As the images show, a light and modern garden home has been created. The bedroom features a large casement window, while the main living area boasts floor-to-ceiling glazing, including a set of French doors that open onto the patio. Additionally, a glazed door has been installed on the side elevation for everyday access.
Natural light floods the plastered and decorated interior, complemented by a durable wooden floor covering.
Externally, the annexe is finished with Cedral cladding, a cement fibreboard that requires minimal long-term maintenance. The boards retain their colour without the need for painting, making Cedral an excellent choice for a garden annexe.
