Enhancing a garden room with a decked area is an excellent way to extend its indoor-outdoor feel. A deck creates a dedicated outdoor seating and entertaining space, and by aligning floor and threshold heights, it enables a smooth, seamless transition between indoors and out. This approach is especially valuable when designing an accessible garden room.
This 7.3-metre by 4-metre garden room by Garden Spaces demonstrates how a deck can beautifully enhance the connection between the room and the surrounding garden.
The deck here wraps around two sides of the building, offering extensive seating both in front of and along the side of the building.
Decking Options from Garden Spaces
Garden Spaces provides a range of decking materials to suit diverse tastes and budgets. Here’s a look at some popular options:
Composite Decking
In this project, the deck features a graphite-coloured composite decking. Composite decking has gained popularity for its grey tones, which complement the modern finishes often chosen for doors, windows, and trims.
Here, the dark grey composite contrasts beautifully with the warm reddish-brown tones of the Western Red Cedar cladding, with the Cedar trim around the deck skirt providing a lovely finishing detail. Composite decking also has a maintenance-free lifespan and requires just an annual wash to keep it looking fresh. Additionally, composite boards are less prone to becoming slippery than timber options.
Balau Hardwood Decking
Another excellent choice for larger projects is Balau hardwood. Sourced responsibly, Balau has long been used for marine decking due to its anti-slip properties and natural resistance to rot and fungal decay.
Balau is virtually knot-free, and its honey colouring pairs beautifully with Western Red Cedar cladding. With annual applications of deck oil, the wood’s natural colour can be preserved, though it will weather to a silver-grey tone over time if left untreated.
Western Red Cedar Decking
For those seeking a cohesive look, Western Red Cedar decking is an appealing choice, particularly when matched to Cedar cladding. Cedar is a highly durable, rot-resistant softwood with rich reddish-brown hues and minimal knots. Applying oil annually will prevent the Cedar from weathering into a silver-grey patina.
Thermowood Decking
Thermowood decking offers a budget-friendly option that complements most cladding types, especially Thermowood itself. This Scandinavian softwood undergoes high-temperature treatment, which greatly improves its durability and resistance to rot.
With annual oil applications, Thermowood decking retains its honey colouring, or it will gradually weather to a soft grey.
Quality Stainless Steel Fixings
Whatever material you choose, Garden Spaces installs decking with countersunk stainless steel fittings for durability. Decking board fixings are spaced at 400mm intervals to ensure a secure, even surface that resists lifting or warping over time.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection
The Garden Spaces team has achieved a flawless connection between the garden room and deck in this design. By aligning the room’s floor with the deck and installing a low-threshold door, they’ve created a step-free transition between indoors and out.
The arrangement of full-height glazing beautifully frames the garden, while the recessed corner glazing – complete with LED downlights in the canopy above – adds a stunning architectural element, casting a gentle curtain of light around the corner.
