This bespoke 7-metre-wide by 3.9-metre-deep garden room by Miniature Manors offers a contemporary space designed specifically for hosting yoga classes and practising martial arts. The room has been thoughtfully positioned to overlook a river—with a family of ducks—and the picturesque Kent countryside, creating the perfect tranquil retreat for a yoga studio.
Bespoke Design on a Budget
The client approached Miniature Manors with an unclear vision and a limited budget. To provide clarity, the team created several design variations, showcasing how different choices would impact the final cost. This highlights the advantages of working with a bespoke garden room designer. Contrary to the misconception that "bespoke" equals expensive, this tailored approach allowed the project to stay within budget while delivering a highly personalised design. Providing your designer with a clear budget often inspires innovative solutions, as seen in this project.
Overcoming Challenging Terrain
The riverbank site presented challenges due to its uneven ground. After careful assessment, Miniature Manors opted to use ground screws for the foundation system. These screws are driven deep into the ground and can be levelled to overcome slopes, ensuring a stable base for the building.
Spacious, Airy Design
Standing at 2.8 metres high, this garden room offers a taller ceiling than the more typical 2.5 metres often seen in similar builds. This increased height creates an airy, spacious feel inside. The elevated height was permissible because the structure was positioned more than two metres from any boundary, adhering to planning guidelines.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection
The front wall features a large set of bi-fold doors, which fold neatly to one side, opening the studio onto a decked veranda. This enhances the connection between the yoga studio and its natural surroundings, providing a calming view of the countryside. Additionally, a narrow rectangular window, set high in one side wall, adds extra light and offers glimpses of the outdoor scenery. The dark grey uPVC doors and windows provide a striking contrast against the natural tongue-and-groove softwood cladding, which has been left untreated for a rustic finish.
Practical and Cost-Effective Interior
Inside, PVC panelling has been used for the walls and ceiling. The bright white finish reflects light beautifully, creating a fresh, clean atmosphere while also being easy to maintain. This cost-effective alternative to plastering balances aesthetics and practicality, ideal for a yoga studio setting.
Efficient Design and Build Process
Miniature Manors worked closely with the client to refine the design and specifications. From the initial enquiry to starting work on-site, the process took four months, with the on-site build completed in just two and a half weeks.
