For those seeking a fully insulated workshop that offers year-round comfort, Garden Fortress can tailor a design to your requirements. This project completed in Wimbledon, showcases a 5m x 4m workshop with integrated storage that epitomises functionality and quality.
Year-Round Comfort with SIP Construction
The client required a space that would maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the seasons. Instead of a traditional shed, they opted for Garden Fortress's SIP (Structurally Insulated Panels) construction, which forms a complete insulated envelope around the workshop, ensuring optimal thermal performance.
Groundworks for a Seamless Transition
A key request was to have the deck at the front of the building flush with the lawn and the workshop floor. Achieving this seamless flow required precise groundwork, which the Garden Fortress team completed by hand. The area was excavated to the necessary depth before ground screw foundations were driven at regular intervals to provide a stable base.
Thanks to the low-threshold bi-fold doors, the transition from the garden to the workshop is entirely step-free. Watch the time-lapse of the build to see how this was accomplished and explore other stages of the project.
Integrated Storage
The workshop design includes built-in storage on one side, maximising functionality and saving the need for a separate structure. A distinctive canopy runs along the front, enhancing both style and usability. Although decking is optional, the client chose to add a low-maintenance composite deck.
Standard uPVC sliding doors were upgraded to bi-fold doors, creating an open, airy entrance. With a low threshold, the doors fully retract, ensuring seamless movement between the outdoor and indoor spaces.
Practical Interior Features
The interior of the workshop is lined with OSB boards on the walls, floor, and ceiling, providing a durable, practical finish ideal for a working environment. The client opted for visible, surface-mounted electrics with galvanised conduit, adding both functionality and an industrial aesthetic. LED panel lights are spaced across the ceiling for bright, clear illumination, and recessed LED downlights in the canopy provide ambient lighting for the decked area.
Mixed Cladding for Cost Efficiency
Western Red Cedar cladding was used for the front wall of the workshop, arranged horizontally for a contemporary look. To balance cost and quality, Thermowood cladding was applied to the sides and rear. This choice maintains a premium appearance where it’s most visible while using a durable, more economical option elsewhere.
