Even the smallest house extension can greatly enhance a home’s functionality. Garden Spaces was commissioned to create a modest 3m x 2.5m extension in their signature contemporary style. The client wanted a compact yet airy space with easy access to the garden, enabling a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
It Starts with a Site Visit
The project began with a complimentary, no-obligation site visit by a member of the Garden Spaces team. This initial consultation provided an opportunity to assess the site and explore various design options. For any extension, large or small, considering how it integrates with existing living areas is essential. In this case, the team recommended connecting the new room to the home via French doors, facilitating a direct flow to the garden. To handle the high-traffic transition between indoors and out, a durable laminate floor was chosen.
Tailored Specifications to Suit Your Needs
Garden Spaces works closely with clients to tailor each extension’s specifications to suit individual needs and budgets, offering a broad palette of customisation options. For this project, the client chose an exterior finish in Cedar cladding, enhancing the space with natural warmth and durability. The structure was built using highly insulated SIP panels, while double-glazed uPVC doors and windows enhanced energy efficiency and thermal performance.
Light-Filled Extension
To achieve the light-filled atmosphere they desired, the client opted for a combination of sliding doors and three floor-to-ceiling fixed windows. These were arranged with two wide panes flanking a narrower one, creating framed garden views. To maximise natural light, a skylight was also installed. Paired with crisp white plastered walls and a light-toned laminate floor, these features create an exceptionally bright and inviting space.
Western Red Cedar Cladding
Externally, the Cedar cladding and dark grey uPVC doors lend the extension a modern aesthetic that contrasts with the brickwork of the main house. The roof is covered with a durable EPDM membrane, softened by a sedum green roof. This eco-friendly addition helps absorb rainwater, supports local wildlife, and enhances the view from upstairs windows with lush greenery.
This project demonstrates how a contemporary extension can be achieved within a limited footprint, creating a stylish and practical addition to the home. As it was built under Permitted Development rules, no full planning application was necessary.
