This is an interesting project by Swift Unlimited that demonstrates how a garden annexe can adapt to different uses over time.
Swift's customer was undergoing extensive work on their house and decided that the first phase would be to create a garden annexe to serve as comfortable, habitable accommodation while the renovations took place. They also envisioned how the building could evolve to meet their family's future needs, such as a playroom, home office, guest room, and more.
Planning and Building Regulation Compliant Garden Room
Due to the size of the annexe and its use as habitable accommodation during the house renovations, this project required both planning permission and Building Control approval. The Swift Unlimited team can handle these applications as part of their full-service package, making the process as stress-free as possible for you.
Two Rooms with Shower Room and Storage
At 14.5 metres wide, this is one of the largest garden annexes we have featured, spanning the full width of the garden. Placing a garden annexe across the garden like this can be a highly effective use of space and visually striking. This design approach can be applied to gardens of all sizes. The space has been divided into two main living areas, with a compact shower room and storage room at one end.
We particularly like how the Swift Unlimited team shaped one end of the building, rather than opting for a standard rectangular design. This adds character and individuality to the annexe.
A partition wall divides the two main rooms, and the Swift team has installed a pocket door between them. This is a smart choice, as the door slides into the wall, making it invisible when open and freeing up valuable space for furniture and movement.
As part of their turnkey service, the Swift Unlimited team organised the connections for the shower room to the mains supplies, including the installation of a pumping station to manage the groundworks.
The storage room is accessed via a 'secret door' on the front elevation. The Swift Unlimited team carefully matched the cladding on the door to the surrounding wall, ensuring it blends seamlessly into the design.
A large composite deck has been installed in front of the garden annexe. The plan is for this deck to lead to a swimming pool, adding yet another future function to the building—a pool room.
