Garden rooms are no longer just home offices for one or two people; they’ve become a practical solution for running customer-facing businesses from home. A perfect example is this hairdresser’s salon, expertly designed and built by Miniature Manors.
A Garden Salon for Work-Life Balance
Miniature Manors’ client, a self-employed hairdresser, wanted to create a distinct boundary between her home life and her work. She opted for a standalone 4m x 3m x 2.5m garden room, providing a dedicated space that meets her needs.
With a height of 2.5m, the building adheres to Permitted Development regulations, though it’s essential to check with your local Planning Department to confirm if a planning application is required when operating a business from home.
Thoughtfully Designed Building
The salon is built using a layered timber frame system. Its walls, floor, and roof are insulated with 50mm of Celotex for year-round comfort. Wrapped in a breather membrane to control moisture, the building is finished with featheredge cladding, adding character and texture. The roof is covered with EPDM for durable, maintenance-free protection.
A small overhang along the front elevation, fitted with exterior downlights, enhances the building’s appearance and provides subtle illumination during the evening.
Light-Filled, Practical Interior
Inside, the salon feels bright and inviting thanks to plastered and painted walls, a moisture-resistant laminate floor, and strategically positioned windows. Unlike designs that feature floor-to-ceiling glazing, this layout prioritises wall space while maintaining a light-filled environment. The room is equipped with three uPVC casement windows and a uPVC glazed door.
Miniature Manors designed a bespoke shelving and desk unit, offering organised storage for hair products, towels, and tea-making essentials, as well as a practical space for managing appointments.
Fully Functional Salon Setup
The salon includes a backwash basin with hot water supplied by a discreet water heater. Two styling stations, complete with chairs and mirrors, create a professional, modern workspace.
Electrical wiring is comprehensive, with five double sockets positioned for hairdryers and other tools. Miniature Manors even arranged for the electrical connection to the house—often an extra task left to the homeowner after installation.
