What Does Cedar Cladding Look Like as It Ages?

Western Red Cedar cladding is a popular choice for contemporary garden rooms. Over time, if left untreated, it develops a natural patina, transitioning from its original reddish-brown tones to an elegant silver-grey finish. This transformation creates a unique aesthetic that many find equally, if not more, appealing.
In this example, a garden room by Sanctum Garden Studios has weathered beautifully after several years. The untreated cedar has mellowed into a soft silver-grey tone, perfectly complementing the dark grey joinery for a strikingly modern and sophisticated look.
You Can Slow the Ageing Process
The weathering of cedar cladding to a silvery-grey tone can be slowed by applying a UV-protective oil during installation. This treatment helps preserve the wood's original reddish-brown colour for longer. To maintain the effect, it’s essential to reapply the oil every few years. Each board should ideally be treated individually before exposure to light to achieve the best and most uniform results.
