3m x 2.8m is a good size for a garden office. At 8.4sqm there is enough room for a proper desk, decent storage, and space to move around without feeling cramped — the sort of footprint that can comfortably accommodate one person working full days without dominating the garden. What can make that size feel even more generous is how glazing is arranged. A well-positioned window or door can open up a view, borrow light, and change how a room reads from inside.
This example by Pecasa Garden Rooms in Hitchin is a great example of how that works in practice. Pecasa designs and builds bespoke garden rooms and annexes across North London, Hertfordshire, and Buckinghamshire, and working bespoke means the position of every window and door can be shaped around the owner's garden and how they plan to use the space. Here, a glazed single door with an opening casement window alongside sits on the side wall, while a wide rectangular window is positioned at desk height on the wall facing into the garden. That front window keeps the garden in view as you work — a simple arrangement that adds a sense of depth and connection through the day.
The structure uses SIPs (structural insulated panel) construction, which is Pecasa's standard approach throughout their range and gives the building good thermal performance for year-round use.
Millboard Cladding
The exterior is finished in Millboard, a composite board with a genuine woodgrain texture and a range of colours available. It doesn't need painting, staining, or seasonal treatment — unlike timber cladding, which typically requires periodic maintenance to keep its appearance. The dark brown boards chosen here give the building a grounded, settled quality in the garden, and the dark grey frames on the door, windows, fascias, and trims work well alongside them. It is a palette that feels contemporary without drawing unnecessary attention to itself.
Lighting Inside and Out
Pecasa's electrical specification is planned around how the building will actually be used. This office is wired for work: the owner can connect equipment and get started from the day the team hand over the keys. Inside, the LED lighting design is tailored to the room. Externally, LEDs are fitted into the eaves detail and up/down wall lights sit beside the door and window — useful at either end of a working day and a considered part of how the building sits in the garden after dark.
Interior Finish
Inside, the walls are plastered and decorated, with the owner's choice of flooring. Pecasa's team has an eye for interior detail and, where clients have ideas, those get worked in — past projects have included feature walls, herringbone floors, and fitted bars. This is a finish that is ready to use from day one, not one that needs further work before it can be.
