Our small garden room examples are a consistently popular section of the site, so we know readers are going to love this 3.5m x 2.1m project by Cosy Garden Rooms. Designed as a bespoke artist’s studio, this insulated garden room has transformed an underused area beside the client’s home in Cambridge into a light-filled, functional, and stylish creative space.
A Space Designed for Creativity
This 7.4sqm garden room proves that you don’t need a large footprint to create something special. The layout has been carefully considered to provide room for a desk, easel, comfortable chair, and dedicated storage for art supplies. A combination of sliding doors on the front elevation and a tall window with an opening section on the right-hand side ensures that natural light flows in throughout the day, while offering easy ventilation for when the studio is in use.
The real wow-factor comes from above—a 1m rectangular roof lantern that floods the room with daylight, creating an inspiring atmosphere perfect for artistic endeavours.
Stylish Finishes Inside and Out
Internally, the finishes have been chosen to support the creative process. The white grooved walls, seamless ceiling, and light grey laminate flooring provide a clean and modern backdrop that won’t distract from the work being created. A discreet wall-mounted infrared heater ensures the studio is warm and comfortable all year round.
Outside, Hardie® Plank cladding in a two-tone colour scheme—Monetary Taupe to the front and left, Anthracite to the back, right, and footer—adds subtle depth and contrast. Hardie Plank is a cement-fibre board known for its durability; it requires no maintenance and retains its colour without the need for repainting.
The 300mm roof overhang adds a stylish detail and provides a little extra shelter. The roof itself has been finished with a living sedum covering, which not only boosts the eco-credentials of the building but also looks beautiful, especially around the perimeter of the skylight where the colour variation in the plants will create a striking frame.
A Turnkey Approach from Cosy Garden Rooms
Cosy Garden Rooms offer a full turnkey service, handling every stage of the project—including the final electrical connection—so the client can simply move in and start being creative. Their ability to design around smaller, unused areas of the garden makes them a great choice if you’re looking to make the most of your outdoor space.
This project shows how even smaller garden rooms can become a valuable extension of your home—whether for work, hobbies, or simply enjoying time to yourself in a peaceful, purpose-built space.
