This 3.2m x 3m example of The Garden Room by Little Green Rooms shows how one of the more compact sizes in their range can still feel generous as a home office, creative studio or garden retreat. At a little over three metres wide and deep, it offers space for a desk and daybed without overpowering the garden. The proportions and glazing help the room feel open, and the insulated structure with aluminium-framed double-glazed doors is designed for comfortable, year-round use.
A Compact Garden Room for Work and Retreat
Little Green Rooms design a single range of garden rooms in 16 set sizes, from 2.3m-wide buildings up to 5.4m-wide layouts. The 3.2m x 3m footprint sits in the middle of that range and is suited to smaller and medium-sized gardens. It creates enough floor area for a defined work zone and a separate place to sit and relax, without dominating the plot.
In this Westrip, Stroud project, the 3m depth allows a desk and storage to sit along the side wall with circulation in front, while the 3.2m width accommodates a daybed sofa on the rear wall. The fully glazed front elevation brings in daylight and garden views, helping the interior feel larger than the floorplan suggests.
Burnt Cedar Cladding and a Living Sedum Roof
Externally, the owner chose Millboard composite cladding in Burnt Cedar. The dark, textured boards wrap the building and emphasise its simple, cubist form. Because Millboard is a composite board, it offers the look of charred timber without the ongoing maintenance of staining or retreating natural wood.
Above, a sedum living roof softens the outline of the building and introduces colour and texture that will change through the seasons. The dark cladding acts as a foil for the greens and other tones in the planting, so the garden room reads as a clear form but does not shout for attention in the garden.
Green Mist Sliding Doors and a Framed Glazed Elevation
On the front elevation, the owner selected aluminium sliding doors in Green Mist. This soft, muted tone works with the planting and sedum roof while still reading as a distinct frame within the façade. The doors are set back within the front wall, so the Millboard cladding frames the fully glazed opening and creates a defined entrance.
The result is a front elevation that is largely glazed but still reads as a clear composition of cladding and glass. The recessed opening gives a sense of arrival at the door and strengthens the indoor–outdoor feel when the doors are open.
Calm Interior Palette
Inside, the owner has paired a feature cork wall with Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball on the remaining walls. The warm, plaster-like pink sits well with the natural tone and texture of the cork, creating a soft, calm backdrop for work or time off. As with other Little Green Rooms projects, the cork wall also helps to dampen sound and reduce echo.
A dark timber floor grounds the space and contrasts with the lighter walls and ceiling. Against this palette, the owner’s furnishings, including a desk and a daybed-style sofa, have been arranged without the room feeling crowded. The wall of glazing on the front elevation keeps the view out to the garden in sight from the main seating and working area, giving the room a lovely indoor–outdoor feel.
Year-Round Comfort and a Turnkey Specification
The Garden Room range is built for year-round use, with a multi-layer insulated structure that includes recycled polyester insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling, and a high-specification envelope with Millboard cladding, an EPDM roof beneath the sedum, aluminium-framed double-glazed doors and full electrics. Heating is provided by an efficient wall-mounted smart heater, and the electrical fit-out is completed in-house so the space is ready to use once it is connected to the mains.
This specification means the room can serve as a small but well-equipped additional space for work, creative projects or quiet retreat, all year round, with a long, low-maintenance lifespan.
