You don’t need a large space to create a functional art studio, as this pottery studio by AMC Garden Rooms demonstrates. With a compact footprint of 2m x 1.5m, it is part of their Garden Pod range.
The clever use of glazing in this design makes the studio feel more spacious than its size suggests.
French doors have been installed on the 1.5m wall. While single doors are often used in buildings of this size, the French doors are an excellent choice. They let in plenty of light, and when opened, create a seamless connection between the indoor workspace and the outdoor environment. A generously sized picture window further enhances the feeling of space, offering a beautiful view of the courtyard garden while flooding the studio with natural light. This top-hung window can also be easily opened to ventilate the space.
Together, the French doors and picture window create a bright, airy workspace, with light bouncing off the crisp white walls, providing the ideal environment for creative work.
The high-quality double-glazed doors and windows, combined with the insulated, multi-layer construction of the floor, walls, and roof, ensure the studio is comfortable year-round. AMC Garden Rooms have also fitted an electric wall heater as part of the electrical specification, further enhancing comfort.
A Living Roof Adds Interest
The garden studio pod is located in a city-centre courtyard garden, and its appearance from above was a key consideration. With the owner living in a three-storey house, the studio’s roof would be visible from the terrace. To enhance the aesthetic, a living sedum roof was chosen.
The sedum roof softens the appearance of the building, offering a more attractive view than a standard grey or black EPDM roof would. The sedum plants provide year-round interest, require minimal maintenance, and help absorb moisture. They also add thermal and acoustic insulation and create a mini ecosystem, attracting insects and providing a food source for birds.
Durable, Low-Maintenance Cladding
The exterior of the studio pod has been clad in Western Red Cedar, a popular choice for its low maintenance and long-lasting qualities. AMC Garden Rooms also offer other cladding options, including maintenance-free composite finishes.
