This bespoke timber frame house extension by MOSSpods has really caught our eye. What we like, is that the MOSSpods team have let the detail of the core structure and the beauty of the materials shine through, creating a stylish, unique extension to a home.
The MOSSpods team were originally commissioned to design a timber frame house extension so that is could act as a spare bedroom for visiting family & friends. However, MOSSpods clients loved the new room so much, that it has become their main living space in the house.
The extension is a sizeable 4.1 meters by 5.4 meters and is based on their Quantock building from their Park Range of MOSSpods. The project did require a Planning Application because one elevation faces a highway, it would have otherwise fallen within the Permitted Development rules for extensions.
The project was not without challenges. Before work could start on installing the extension, a considerable amount of soil had to be excavated from the site so that the new room would sit level with the house. This also involved building retaining walls. At the end of the project, the MOSSpods team completed the landscaping of the garden. MOSSpods are one of the few companies who offer landscaping as part of the overall project.
The exterior of the extension looks great, but to our mind, its the interior where the MOSSpods team have worked their magic. The corner of glazing made up with a set of French doors and three long windows, create a great connection with the newly designed garden.
Perhaps the key feature of the room is the large roof light. This floods the room with natural light and must allow the homeowners the chance to gaze at the clouds as they sit on the sofa. The roof window is enhanced by the exposed redwood beams of the roof structure.
The extension is highly insulated and the doors and windows are double glazed, making it a comfortable space to spend time all year round. A wood burner has been fitted for the coldest days of the year.
Another nice detail is the glass pocket door which discreetly slides into the wall structure. The addition of this allows the homeowners to close off the extension from the main house.
