Guest post by My Eco Space who explain how they approach the design of a specialist gym building.
When we were asked by Simon Farrar Personal Trainer and fitness consultant, we assumed it would be similar in design to previous garden gym projects, and it didn’t hold any fears for our design team. After all, we had already designed and built specialist garden gyms for a top Premier League Football Physio and formula one team fitness consultant so we were confident of our ability to step up to the plate and produce a gym that would fit his criteria and requirements.
Simons project was different in many ways, for a start Simon had training equipment we hadn’t encountered before which needed extra height. It didn’t stop there, he needed a consultation room, a changing room and a design that would not only function well, it also had to look good and suit his very nice, well-established garden.
Following several meetings and phone calls, we set about our task of designing Simons perfect garden gym. He wanted to impress his many existing and hopefully new clients, so this had to be special. After more consultations with Simon, we came up with three designs we thought would work. Choosing a pitched roof version, there was still more work to do, a tweak here and a change there until he had his ideal gym.
He had this idea of a grand entrance so that when his clients walked through the doors of the gym, the first thing they saw was this fantastic open, uncluttered space with state of the art equipment and a panoramic view of his garden through a wall of glass. Fully air conditioned and draft free for their comfort. This gym certainly does have the wow factor
This was a large building which would have the additional weight of heavy equipment, so everything needed to calculated by structural engineers. Extra ground screws for the foundations and extra thick walls to carry the myriad of training equipment. We even added extra roof beams sufficiently strong enough to carry the weight of 3 people. As an open plan building, we had to blend in the floor material where consultation room meets training room. Heavy duty laminated floor for the entrance and heavy duty gym matting at the business end.
The changing room and toilet facility needed to be comfortable. Light and airy.
We’re proud to say that with the brilliant help from Simon we have achieved his goal of a magnificent looking, working facility surrounded by a mature landscaped garden.
Over the years we have picked up valuable experience and working on this project has been no exception, we have certainly learned a lot from this project.
We often consult with Simon and other professional fitness trainers when undertaking new garden gym projects for new clients to make sure that large or small, personal or professional; they get the garden gym of their dreams.
