Green Studios have become experts in creating self-contained living annexes in the garden and were recently approached by customers Sue & Paul who were looking to create a home in their garden for Paul’s elderly brother in law.
Sue and Paul had a clear vision of what they wanted to create. They wanted to create a spacious building as it is going to be used as a permanent home. It had to be on one level for easy access; open plan and self-contained with it’s own kitchen and bathroom.
Having done their initial research Sue & Paul invited a few companies to conduct a site visit, this is good practice as you will see what each companies approach is and get a feel for working with them on what is a big project. Sue & Paul opted for Green Studios as they felt their surveyor was knowledgeable and offered some good suggestions for the project:
We were very happy with what Green Studios proposed. In fact we talked to a few different garden room companies, but we really liked Green Studios approach and the site inspector’s manner, knowledge and proposed solution. We felt totally comfortable with his suggestions and liked that he was able to guide us as to what could be achieved with the space and budget we had.” Sue Colvin
The annexe that Green Studios designed is virtually square at just over 6m x 6m and is cleverly laid out to create a large main living space with a kitchen in the corner, leaving plenty of space for eating, sofa’s, etc. A single bedroom and shower room flow off this main space.
Windows have been cleverly positioned to flood each area with natural light and frame views of the established garden.
The annexe has been positioned in an area alongside the main house; it has been positioned so that it doesn’t interrupt the views from the main house – apparently, the views from the annexe itself are particularly good! Visitors can access the annexe through the side gate, so don’t even need to go into the main house which is a great solution when creating two households like this.
Green Studios living annexes are highly insulated structures, being built upon as SIP’s core. The finished building has the feel of a high spec, new build house and will need little maintenance to keep in good order. Because of the high levels of insulation, the garden bungalow should be cost effective to maintain.
The annexe was fully complete in just a few weeks, and Sue & Paul are delighted with the building:
We’re extremely pleased we embarked on this project with Green Studios, we would recommend them to others and in fact we have shown our garden room to two sets of people already! Green Studios will always be our first port of call should we need another one in the future!” Sue Colvin.
