Over the years, we have featured several garden room buildings which have been chosen as a space to practice yoga or pilates. On the whole, they have been large rooms with enough space for a whole class of people. This project by Garden Affairs is different, as it is quite modest in size, proving you don't need much space to create a peaceful yoga studio in your garden.
While one of the smaller yoga studios we have featured. At 3 meters wide by 2.5 meters deep. It is approximately the size of a spare bedroom, so it offers plenty of space for one or two people to exercise.
The studio will actually feel bigger than it is, thanks to the corner of glazing that has been created by mixing outward opening French doors with full height glazed windows. The picture window on the side elevation must have a great view up the garden!
One garden building, two uses
The garden room, taken from Garden Affairs Linea Duo range is 4.5m wide by 2.5m deep. As its name describes, the Duo range is divided into two rooms. Each with external access. The larger room, which is 3m x 2.5m forms the pilates and yoga studio. The smaller room, which is 1.5m wide by 2.5m deep, provides a valuable storage area.
The storage room sits discreetly at one end. The door leading into the room has been clad in the same Larch as the main walls, so it blends in, streamlining the building.
Often when we explore garden rooms with secret storage rooms, the storage area does not feature a window, so it has no natural light. It is nice to see how the Garden Affairs team have incorporated a good-sized window into this room. Positioned high in the wall, it is in the perfect position for a workbench to be fitted underneath.
Incorporating two distinct uses within one building, like this, is a clever use space and can make a garden seem bigger than having separate garden buildings for different uses.
The exterior of Garden Affairs Linea range has is finished with Siberian Larch cladding. Larch is a durable external cladding material. It has a pale honey colour when new and will weather to a silver-grey if left untreated. Garden Affairs offer the option of staining the cladding in their factory, or you can do it once the room is built. They offer a palette of stain colours. What is great about using a coloured stain is that the grain of the Larch is still visible.
The timber doors and windows have been painted in the Garden Affairs factory before fitting. This ensures the best possible finish is achieved - not dependent on our variable British weather! Garden Affairs offer a palette of colours for you to mix and match with the colour of the exterior cladding.
Custom steps overcome the sloping site
This garden room has been built on sloping ground. Access in and out of the main yoga room is relatively level, but the entrance to the storage room is quite a step up.
To enable easy access, four steps have been built at the entrance to the storage room. We like how they have been tiered at the corner of the building. Grooved decking has been used, so the steps shouldn't become slippery.
