This 3.36m x 3.36m garden room was built by Vivid Green for an episode of Love Your Home & Garden. The room needed to have easy, level access for a wheelchair so the whole family can enjoy it.
The family at the centre of the wanted an extra room that they could all use and enjoy. Parents Nina & Steve are both wheelchair users, so level access was required.
Normally when building a garden room, there is s step up from the ground into the room. With thought though, the building can be positioned so that the entrance doors and floor within the room are at the same level as the ground outside. Making entering the room as easy for a wheelchiar user as an able bodied person.
The Vivid Green team excavated the ground so that the floor would ultimately be level with the footpath outside.
Once the foundation was installed, the SIP's framework went together quickly. The core structure was completed in one day and the building fully weathertight and ready for the interior detailing in just three days.
The exterior of the garden room was clad in Western Red Cedar. As we can see from the photo above this has a lovely reddish-brown richness when first installed. To maintain this colour, a UV-oil needs to be applied.
Before applying the oil, the Vivid Green team chatted with Alan Titchmarsh the host of the show and it was decided that reapplying the oil every year or two was too much maintenance for the family. It was decided to leave the Cedar to weather to a silver grey.
This change in colour does not affect the durability of the cladding; it just changes its appearance.
