If you are looking for more of a garden room shelter than a fully insulated room, then this new option from Ark Design Build will interest you. A garden room shelter has so many possible uses. It could be a covered seating area or a shaded play area for young children, an outdoor dining room or a place for a hot tub. They can be standalone buildings or attached to an insulated garden room.
Designed by one of the Ark Design Build founders, Tim as a sheltered spot in his own garden. Tim's garden room shelter is attached to a storeroom but could be connected to a fully insulated room or be built as a standalone building.
Ark Design Build's shelter design has all the style of a contemporary garden room, but with an open wall instead of a set of doors. This truly is an inside-outside room.
The Ark Design Build team have managed to incorporate many of the popular features of their garden rooms into the shelter. Built using a sturdy traditional timber framework, the shelter is not insulated as a garden room would be. The exterior, in this case, has been clad in Thermowood but we are sure you could specify Cedar cladding if that is what you prefer. The timber cladding has also been used on one of the interior walls, creating a striking feature wall.
Inside, the timber feature wall has been mixed with crisp white walls. The walls and ceiling have been lined with moisture boards, plastered and then painted in moisture-resistant paint. Tim built this garden room shelter a year ago, and as we can see, this mix of finishes look just as crisp today!
We like the detailing on the rear wall; a shallow, horizontal window has been fitted high on the wall with a recessed detailing underneath.
The shelter has been electrically wired using exterior grade fittings. The downlights in the ceiling must create a nice vibe when sitting outside of an evening. Tim and his family use an exterior garden heater to take the chill off.
The floor of the garden shelter is composite decking. The dark grey colour looks great with the timber and white finishes. The deck extends out into the garden by 3m, offering free movement between inside and out.
The Ark Design Build team tell us they have lots of ideas for their garden shelters. They could be designed as outdoor kitchens with flu and water connections etc.
