A recent customer of Green Studios approached them with a brief to design a garden room that worked for the family on several levels. They wanted to create a family den in the garden where they could spend evenings together watching films. They also wanted a space that would work as an occasional home office and a spacious gym with storage for all their equipment.
The family in Cambridge has a spacious garden so this was an opportunity to create a large garden room that could fulfil all the brief. A 9 meters wide by 4.5-meters deep building was decided upon. Because this brings the footprint of the building to more than 30 square meters it is classed as a dwelling, so both Building Regulations and Planning Permission was required for this project. Green Studios handled both of these application processes on the client’s behalf, ensuring a stress-free process for the family.
To comply with the Building Regulations for a dwelling, an extra layer of insulation was incorporated into the structure and the integrity of the foundations and infrastructure was assured.
A striking, modern garden room
Working with their client Green Studios have created a striking, modern garden room. For us, this building really stands out, this is partly due to the use of open Cedar cladding. The majority of garden rooms we see make use of tongue & groove boards which create a solid flat surface. The open cladding that Green Studios have used adds a lot of depth to the wall and interest in the colour differenced of each batten. Open board cladding like this, is as durable as T&G cladding as a special rain-screen membrane is fitted behind the boards protecting the walls from the ingress of water. The dark colouring of the rain-screen membrane helps create the shadow line between each board, giving it the feeling of depth.
We also like the simplicity of just using one large area of glazing in this building. A 4.8 meter set of sliding patio doors has been positioned in the centre of the front elevation. They flood the room with natural light but don’t break up the striking cladding finish.
Internally, the room has a light modern feel. This is thanks to the mix of the wooden floor and the fully plastered and decorated walls and ceiling. You will notice looking at the ceiling that between the LED downlights are ceiling hooks so that resistance equipment can be easily hooked in.
Green Studios have clearly fulfilled their brief with this building. Emma, their customer comments:
Green Studios came across as really knowledgeable and experienced, we felt more confident in their ability to deliver and make sure we got what we wanted from our garden room. They supported us every step of the way, even helping with planning permission and building regulations to make sure we got the scope we wanted and really took the hassle out of the whole process for us. The whole team was brilliant, the whole process from start to finish was really good and well worth the investment.”
