When researching your options, you may have come across garden room marketplaces and listings on the big sites such as eBay, or a new crop of companies acting as design agents for several companies. They are a good place to explore your options, side by side, but you don’t have to buy your garden room via a marketplace. You can also deal directly with the different garden room companies.
The Garden Room Guide is not a marketplace. We are a buyers guide; our aim is to inform buyers about their garden room options and showcase the work of a large part of the industry. We earn income from some companies choosing to advertise with us, but the greater number of companies we feature do not pay us. If you leave The Garden Room Guide by clicking on a link to explore a company further, and then go on to buy, we don’t get a payment.
You’ll always get the best deal on your garden room, buying direct
When buying a garden room, you are always going to get the best deal and service by dealing directly with the company that designs and manufactures them. If the supplier is not passing on commission payments to a marketplace or agent, they will pass on any savings they can make to you the customer.
Buying a garden is a collaborative process
The success of the garden room industry is based on the way that each building can be tailored to the customer’s individual needs. There are very few standard, one size fits all designs on the market. This is because each buyer wants a building the size that works for them, with a specific layout and set of design features.
A listing on a market place does not offer this level of flexibility, and you could end up making compromises on the size, layout and design of your room, and that’s not good! Once you move along the buying process, you may be able to tweak the design and specification, but if you do, you will find you are paying more than was initially quoted online.
For best results, deal directly
Already popular, the garden room market has boomed since the COVID-19 pandemic started. More and more people are looking to their garden to add a home office or a home gym building. This has encouraged new companies into the market. We have heard of several new firms who plan to act as agents for different companies, earning a commission from any sale. They plan to be the liaison between you, the customer and the garden room company, removing the valuable connection between client and designer.
We can see no real benefit to you the customer working with one of these agents as you can easily explore the work of different companies yourself. You will miss out on the process of working closely with an experienced designer to tailor the building to your needs and could well end up spending more than you need too.
Because these agents work on a commission basis, they will be inclined to promote the companies they get the greatest commission rate from. They will also earn more, the more you spend, so there is the possibility that they will encourage you to spend on features, you do not need or want.
Also, you, the customer, is ultimately going to cover the cost of the commission payment, in the prices you are quoted for your building!
Try configurators and request site surveys
You can explore your options, in detail, with two or three companies by requesting a site survey. These surveys are free and without obligation. They are such a valuable experience as you will get to explore your options with a designer who will be able to access your site to highlight any obstacles and then provide you with detailed designs options and costings for your project.
Since the pandemic, some companies have moved away from in-person site surveys, at least in the first instance. They are still a worthwhile experience, and you will be sent designs and quotes afterwards. The companies who are still offering in-person visits have strict social distancing policies in place to protect you, and them.
A few companies have online configurators on their website, allowing you to design and price out your garden room prior to making formal contact with the company. If this is a route you want to explore, check out Modern Garden Rooms configurator and Green Retreats version.
So, to conclude, you will get the best experience and deal if you deal directly with a garden room company. Use our suppliers directory to find experienced garden room companies who work in your area of the UK.
