A recent client wanted to create a home office and family space but had a limited budget and couldn't afford a luxury garden room. The Hargreaves Garden Spaces team discussed their options, and an insulated log cabin was decided upon.
While not comparable to the multi-layer build-up of a garden room that forms an envelope of insulation around the building, an insulated log cabin building is a better option than an uninsulated one or a summer house or shed.
A 4m x 5m cabin was decided upon; it cost just under £13,000; on top of this, the owner asked an electrician friend to install the electrics. At roughly £650 per square meter, the choice of a log cabin worked out at about half the price of buying a higher-spec multi-layer garden room.
Insulated log cabin
Log cabin buildings come in varying qualities; the thicker the timbers used for the walls, the better, in terms of strength and keeping the warmth in. Hargreaves Garden Spaces offer 44mm thick interlocking timbers for the walls of their cabins. This creates a wind and weatherproof structure.
Hargreaves Garden Spaces used 50mm thick EPS100 Polystyrene insulation in the floor structure. They then used 50mm of foil faced EcoTherm insulation in the roof, enveloping the whole roof, including the overhangs.
A tricky site transformed
The office cabin was built in a tricky area of the garden. The access was difficult, and the ground was uneven. A level foundation was created with 100mm composite posts set in concrete for strength, supporting a C16 150mm x 47mm floor frame.
The log cabin office has maximised the owners budget
While a budget of £13,000 is a lot of money, it is a tight budget for a multi-layer garden room, and you'd be limited to looking at small designs.
