Swift Garden Rooms, who operate nationwide, share details of a two-roomed garden office they just built in South Manchester. The clever design, not only maximises the space available it has also been future-proofed so that with relative ease it could be transformed into one large room:
In all of our projects, the first thing we do is listen.
Learning exactly what each of our clients need, as well as their likes and dislikes, is all vital before we start the design process for their life changing space.
On this, our latest and (as it turned out) time critical undertaking, our clients were a dynamic, professional couple from a fashionable South Manchester suburb.
Each of them found that working from home was increasing their productivity. Unfortunately, their beautiful and very stylish home was not versatile enough to provide them with the space they really needed. For them and many of our home workers in a similar situation, a Swift Garden Office was the perfect solution. Our clients needed a unique office, sub-divided to create two working spaces with soundproofing and had a budget of around £33,000.
As always, we had a number of challenges ahead of us!
On investigating the modest-sized garden, we discovered that it was an unusual shape, with no corners at perfect right angles. We needed a one-of-a-kind solution to make the best possible use of this available space. We solved the problem by simply creating a building design to perfectly match the parallelogram dimensions. We were able to provide a 5m x 3.3m building, with each separate office having a space of 2.5m x 3.3m.
Swift create a 3d model of the office for their customers so that they can visualise the building. This can include animations covering all angles as well as superimposing the new room into the existing setting.

The main sliding doors spanned the whole of the front width, giving a vast amount of natural light to each office and also clever, independent access to each half. The offices also benefit from the luxury of underfloor heating, invaluable for the chillier home working months! Consistently thinking ahead and planning for future return on investment for our clients, we made the internal wall removable. A large and versatile space with flexible appeal can be restored simply and effectively.
At Swift, we are always thinking of others and part of the service is taking into account the effect that any new build will have on neighbours. To minimise the impact here, we located the room 500mm away from the dividing fence and clad the visible wall with attractive cedar. This provided an appealing backdrop to the neighbour's garden. Upon completion of the building and to protect the invaluable office equipment, we also fitted a security alarm system.
As we were building, we faced new obstacles - restrictions were gradually being imposed in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This meant our supply chains were faltering with main merchants closing their branches. Sourcing some of the final materials was a real challenge! Namely, the insulation for the internal wall which was borrowed from another local builder and a much-needed final bag of plaster, which had to be collected by our client. Our home-workers were desperate to have their building completed before any lockdown. This really was teamwork in the extreme!
We are always proud to complete each and every one of our projects and so delighted to see this garden room being enjoyed by our clients. They can now work so much more effectively thanks to this additional space.
