3.6m x 2.4m is a good size for a one person garden office. It’s spacious enough for a desk and storage space but doesn’t steal too much room in the garden. This example by Sanctum Garden Studios was ordered by a journalist to create a professional home office.
The building is from Sanctum Garden Studios Contemporary Range. This range of buildings comes in two key formats – a style with roof overhang that creates a nice eaves detail and a more cubist option where the walls run straight up into the roof intersection. The Contemporary Range also comes with lots of options on size, layout and specification.
This customer opted for the standard French doorset on the front elevation; he also chose a single 600mm wide x 1m high opening window to the side elevation. The addition of an opening window is a wise choice in a garden room as it offers the flexibility of ventilating the room without relying on opening the doors.
The standard specification for the interior in a Sanctum Garden Studio like this is a white wall board. Sanctums’ customer chose to upgrade this finish to a fully plastered and decorated interior, creating a room that has the look and feel of a room in a new build house. They coupled this with an upgrade to the flooring, choosing a Light Oak laminate rather than the standard American Walnut.

The building is insulated throughout so is designed for year round use, but the customer opted to have a slimline electric heater fitted. This will quickly heat the room on the coldest days of the year and is a flexible option.
The customer had this to say about the project:
The Sanctum team worked like demons, fuelled only by vats of tea and coffee, to complete my Contemporary studio in under three days. Gary and the lads are a friendly, helpful bunch. When they found themselves with half an hour to spare, they helpfully filled in the soil on the trench I’d had dug for the electrical cable, even though there was no obligation to do so.
The finish on the studio both inside and out is absolutely superb and it looks like a magnificent piece of modern art in the garden. We’re having artificial turf laid this week, so I’ll send you over some photos of the finished effect. Thank you very much for your hard work. I can’t recommend Sanctum highly enough.”
