Contemporary Garden Rooms had designed and built a classroom for Fitzalan School in Cardiff, back in 2016. Due to rapidly increasing pupil numbers, the school commissioned Contemporary Garden Rooms to build a second, larger classroom in 2018.
A 10 meter wide by 6 meter deep building was decided upon. A 2.5 meter deep covered veranda runs along the front of the building, so that students can shelter from the weather as they queue for class. A ramp leads up to the veranda providing easy access for all.
A 5-leaf set of aluminium bi-fold doors open up onto the veranda. Creating a great connection between inside and outside spaces. Once folded back, the doors offer easy access into the classroom. In addition to the bi-fold doors the building is fitted with a push bar fire exit door and fire window.
Project managed from start to finish
Contemporary Garden Rooms offer a turnkey service on their classroom projects. They work closely with the school to create the best layout, and to ensure all their needs are incorporated into the design. They liaise with planning and building control departments and then project manage the build right through to the final decoration and connection to the mains services.
Built using a traditional timber framing method, the structure is highly insulated for comfortable use all year round. The external finishes used all have long, low maintenance lifespans. The finishes used include Western Red Cedar, an EPDM roof covering and Aluminium doors and windows.
Disability room and kitchenette
The classroom has been designed to include a kitchenette and fully fitted disability room, so is self-contained from the main school building. The main classroom space has been plastered and decorated and a hard wearing engineered oak floor.
The classroom has been fitted with air conditioning so that the temperature in the room can be controlled all year round.
Why weren’t classrooms like this when we were at school?!
