Last year as we celebrated the tenth anniversary of The Garden Room Guide, we chose our ten favourite garden room projects. Swift Garden Rooms are also celebrating their 10th birthday. We started featuring their work in 2011. In fact, we have gone on to feature them quite a lot, with this being our 100th article!
To celebrate this 100th feature and Swift's tenth birthday, we asked them to pick out their ten favourite garden room projects:
1. Shore Cottage
Not only is this family owned studio unique in it's bold design and location, it is also a perfect example of two families uniting around a table with a sketchpad, ideas board and cakes. During the Shore cottage studio build a number of challenges needed to be overcome.
- Delicate planning application, respecting the environment, public perception and our clients aspirations
- Uneven cliff-side site with no road access
- Transportation of literally tons of valuable and bespoke elements of the building across a hostile and challenging beach track
- Installation of massive glazed doors and panorama window
All of which was to be done under the watchful eye of Channel 4. As you can see from the testimonial below, the client was thrilled with the finished studio...
Laura Heath, Shore Cottage Art Studio, Wirral, www.shorecottagestudio.com says:
"We invited a number of companies to quote for our build, but from the moment Martin walked through our door we knew Swift was the only company we would want to work with. Martin's enthusiasm for our project was palpable from the day he made his first visit to us. Martin described his team as being solution focused and our unique build certainly threw up plenty of challenges to overcome.
The Swift team handled everything smoothly from successfully gaining planning permission first time (despite being in a greenbelt and in an SSSI) to working the build and site deliveries around incoming tides, and scheduling the build around the migratory patterns of protected wading birds.
The build itself went like clockwork and the result is an inspirational building and an amazing home to our creative workshop business. The building and business has been a life changing project for us and we are so pleased to have worked with such a great team who have realised our plans in a well organised and stress-free way."
2. Indoor outdoor room, Hampshire
There is so much we love about this design. The multipurpose garden room has the ideal elevated position overlooking our clients garden and the beautiful Hampshire countryside. The uniquely designed trapezoid rap around glazing feature is the perfect way to take in the view. With the extended veranda to the front and continuous flooring between the indoor and outdoor spaces this is a spectacular building that really stand out from the crowd.
3. Salisford Canal meeting room
This beautiful, purpose-built, canal-side 10m x 5m meeting room Is an easy choice for our top 10. The genuine canal boat porthole window features help Swift's design stand out from the crowd, whilst blending in with it's surroundings.
The meeting room is a great example of Swift's inspired bespoke approach to commercial buildings.
A Lorentzen, Chairman Saltisford Canal Trading Ltd says:
Swift immediately stood out... Professional presentation of company and Swift buildings... Detailed first class quotation with unique suggested design input... Most enjoyable and pleasant people to do business with... Excellent customer support team... Hardworking construction team were a pleasure to have on site... Incredibly fast build to the very highest standards... We are not disappointed with our choice!.
4. Bespoke living annexe
Although this is by far the biggest, most impressive annexe we have built, this building is one of our favourites mostly because it exemplifies what we do best...create life-changing spaces. The garden room was built with some very specific requirements and the result is a custom made home in the garden that has a wonderful connection with its surrounding countryside, exactly what the client was hoping for.
5. Llangollen room with a view
The client initially enquired looking for...'A family space with lots of glazing'. Our designers took one look at the garden space, the garden room plot and the view and they immediately knew that the focus of the room should be its uninterrupted views of the beautiful hills and the river that runs next to it. The client agreed. The room needed to be a space to appreciate the view, an outdoor sitting room. The design process, as usual was a collaboration between Swift and the client - honing designs until they are just right. An eye catching result, that doesn't overshadow the view.
6. Garden room with conversation piece
When you are asked arrive at a clients property for a site survey to find an 'old school' red telephone box in the garden next to the swimming pool, our immediate reaction is that this building will certainly need to be prominent, unusual, stylish and a conversation piece. This gorgeous multi-purpose room is all of that and more. It's impressive design has a sophisticated, contemporary feel, with it's blend of black and cedar.
7. Garden games room
This versatile and impressive studio is a great example of Swift working as an integrated part of a bigger landscaping program. The finished project results in an impressive garden space that focusses on outdoor living.
8. Art Deco style garden studio
Martin picked up on the clients liking for art deco style and thought it would be fun to design this in to the building - she loved the idea. It has resulted in a room that not only matches the clients needs, but encapsulates her personality too.
9. Day nursery building
This striking day nursery is a favourite of ours as it showcases that Swift are just as talented at creating elegant large commercial building as they are at intimate, cosy rooms. Footprints Day Nursery in Bollington was also nominated for a Building Excellence Award by Cheshire East Council...a well deserved accolade for a stunning building.
10. Art studio with Tricoya cladding
When interviewed by Swift, abstract artist Rachel Camilleri said "colour and shape spark my creativity", Interestingly, it is the colour and shape which contribute to this garden studio's finished stylish and contemporary look. The building is not only a creative, light-filled space for the artist to work in, but it is also a crisp backdrop for her to showcase her vibrant artwork. The modern style of her Swift studio matches the renovations and extension to the original school house they call home perfectly.
