The Pitched Roof Garden Studio is Back!

New designs by Decorated Shed, Studioni & Garden Spaces

We’re delighted to see that pitched roof garden studios are back on designers drawing boards, the last few months have seen new pitched roof garden studio designs by Decorated Shed, Garden Spaces and Studioni hit the market.

Where did the pitched roof go?

Nowhere! There has been a core collection of classic pitched roof garden studios which have remained popular, but few new pitched roof studios have been designed, with flat roofed contemporary garden studios dominating the market.

Why?

There are a number of reasons why the pitched roof studio became less popular with designers and buyers – pitched roof studios are considered more traditional and the fashion has been for modern, contemporary design which designers have found easiest to fulfil with flat roof and mono pitch garden studios. Another reason is that pitched roof studios are more complicated to design and build than flat roof studios, they also cost more to build as they use more materials than their flat roof counterparts. The final reason, and perhaps the reason why pitched roof studios fell out of favour with buyers is that flat roof garden studios under 2.5m high can be placed nearer the boundary line than pitched roof garden studios without requiring planning permission.

Now, the pitched roof is back, and looks set to be the trend for 2011…

Pitched roofs have many benefits

  • Pitched roof garden studios have a light and airy feel thanks to the additional headroom offered by the vaulted ceiling.
  • Pitched roof garden studios are less ‘boxy’ than flat roof garden studios and often more visually attractive.
  • Different shape pitched roofs such as hipped roofs give a garden studio a unique shape and feel.
  • Pitched roof coverings such as cedar shingles and zinc are often more visually attractive than flat roof coverings.
  • Pitched roof garden studios often compliment the design of the main house better than flat roof garden studios.
  • Additional natural light can be gained by placing windows high in the gable end.
  • With the addition of guttering you can collect vital rainwater for use on your garden.
