So, what is a garden room?

It’s whatever you want it to be!

In literal terms a garden room is a free standing, fully insulated, electrical wired building situated in the garden, they are a genuine alternative to a conservatory, loft conversion or traditional home extension when it comes to adding extra space to your home.

Modern garden rooms are built just like timber frame houses and utilise many of the same materials and building techniques. Garden rooms vary from basic models to high spec designs which feature many of the ‘on trend’ design features we see in the glossy magazines such as bi-fold doors, feature radiators, cedar cladding and living roofs.

Design wise there is a lot of choice, from compact buildings which can sit on the same size footprint a communal garden shed would need, to large multi room buildings which feature kitchens and shower rooms.

There is a style of garden room for every taste, for the traditionalists there are beautifully tiled hipped roof, oak frame buildings, there are pretty painted cottage style buildings or garden rooms with verandas for sitting on a barmy summers evening.

If you are looking for something a little more modern, there are cubist designs, curved roof buildings and even round garden rooms.

As we say garden rooms are a real alternative to other types of extension, many designs don’t require planning permission, cost wise they work out cheaper than a loft conversion or traditional extension, and can be fully installed and ready to use in a week!

It is widely agreed that a good quality garden room will add value to your home, and is a desirable selling feature, some models have been designed so you can take your garden room with you when you move – many people do – there is also a growing demand for second hand garden rooms.

So, that’s what a garden room is physically, the list of what you might use it for is endless, popular uses are home offices, artists’ studios, music rooms, home gyms, games rooms, playrooms, guest accommodation, granny annexes or just a place to sit and enjoy being away from the house!

The Garden Room Guide is designed to showcase the work of garden room suppliers, and as a buyer’s guide for those of you looking to buy a garden room. We have an interactive supplier’s directory, guides on garden room construction, a wide range of supplier reviews and much more…!
